Headquartered in Davis, CA and venture capital-backed, Marrone Bio Innovations (MBI), discovers, develops, and markets effective and environmentally responsible natural products for pest management in ag and water.
We are currently looking for a Patent Scientist to join our Research and Development team. In this role the candidate will have patent preparation responsibilities. Primary support will include draft of papers and new patent applications, technical support for preparation of patent applications, patent and literature database searching, review and evaluation of new invention disclosures, and coordinating interactions between researchers and an experienced patent attorney. Also this candidate will assist in evaluating intellectual property of inventions from outside the company that we could license in. Advanced occasional responsibilities may also include writing technical articles for marketing and technical documentation for regulatory submissions.
Responsibilities and Duties
Take documentation of experiments on new discoveries, new formulations and other patentable inventions and write the patent application documents that are to be filed by our patent attorney.
Keep up to date with the status of pending patents, the actions and deadlines required and coordinating with the appropriate people within the company to get the information in a timely fashion for our patent attorney.
Review and evaluate the inventions that come to us for in-licensing.
Conduct literature and patent searches for background on new technologies inside and outside the company.
When time allows, write documentation for registration submissions
When time allows, write technical articles and copy that will be used by Marketing/Product Managers.
Qualifications and Characteristics
MS degree with 2-4 years in a life sciences field or a PhD.
Patent Scientist with at least 2years of experience in the preparation of patent applications is required.
Science background in the areas of microbiology, biochemistry, agricultural sciences or a related field.
Good technical writing skills.
Must be self-motivated, highly productive, able to clearly express complex scientific concepts in written form.
Ability to work closely with diverse teams, coordinate work flow and drive it to its conclusion, manage competing priorities, and work with in-house and outside counsel are also essential skills.
Ability to take raw technical data and turn it into a coherent written document.
Very good organizational and time management skills: work on multiple projects at one time as well as work efficiently under deadlines to deliver documentation on time.
Good oral communications skills.
Work independently with minimal supervision.
In addition, the individual should have knowledge of / be familiar with:
Document processing software, including Word and Acrobat.
Scientific literature databases and how to perform detailed literature searches
Use of bibliographic software, such as EndNote
