Under the direction of the Phlebotomy Regional Manager, the Phlebotomy Supervisor is responsible for the daily supervision and operations of the phlebotomy department. Including the daily operation and duties of phlebotomists in and outside the main laboratory. The phlebotomy supervisor must be capable of performing, teaching, and monitoring all functions within the department.
Must follow and ensure all staff follows all safety precautions to ensure both patient and phlebotomist safety.
Must understand and relate to staff all age specific phlebotomy functions and procedures.
Must communication with various departments and communication with clients everyday as needed.
Must practice and teach good customer service skills (written and oral) toward customers, coworkers, and all others.
Must demonstrate respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous work environment.
Must be able to provide leadership, training, and guidance to all subordinate staff and assigned students in an authoritative, yet personable manner.
Must be able to define and monitor performance and quality assurance standards for subordinate staff to include aspects such as attendance (absences, tardiness, overtime, etc), collection statistics, turn-around-time, recollection of samples, misses, complaint resolution, patient satisfaction, problem management, etc.
Must be fiscally responsible with the departmental budget, to include: monitoring supply usage, overtime, etc. to ensure that the departmental budget is not exceeded, and to prepare variance exceptions and explanations whenever a budget is exceeded.
Must be able to evaluate the technical competency of subordinate staff at all times, and deal with suboptimum performance in an appropriate and timely manner.
Must be able to write, edit, and maintain the procedures, forms, and documentation generated or used by the department.
Must be capable of determining the workload of the department, scheduling staff to ensure the correct staffing is present at all times.
Must maintain a consistent state of departmental readiness in preparation for unannounced inspections as performed by the CAP, the State of Indiana/Ohio/Kentucky/Missouri HFAP, OSHA, and other regulatory agencies.
Must understand, perform, and teach all aspects of phlebotomy practice, based on written procedures to include: phlebotomy, specimen labeling, specimen receipt, specimen processing, specimen delivery, and specimen archiving.
Must understand, monitor, and teach staff to meet all requirements for the timeliness of phlebotomy, based on existing categories of: routine, timed, and stat.
The phlebotomy supervisor is responsible for determining the amount of supplies to have on hand, organization of supplies, ordering and checking in new supplies, and monitoring the use of supplies.
Evaluates, interviews, and recommends for employment new staff.
Completes prescribed performance evaluations of staff in a timely manner.
Follows existing Human Resources policies to implement progressive discipline when necessary to correct performance issues. Always follows the appropriate chain of command when an issue needs to be escalated.
Maintains patient confidentiality at all times, and teaches and monitors staff to do the same.
Develops performance goals and objectives for each staff member to promote maximum productivity, proficiency, and professional growth.
Recommends ways to reduce expenditures without compromising the quality of services. This can include creative scheduling to maximize productivity and recommending new equipment and phlebotomy supplies that reduce costs or enhance productivity.
Effectively communicates to staff, regularly scheduled department meetings, and one-on-one staff encounters, to ensure that all staff are continuously informed on a timely basis.Responsible for ensuring that all continuing education requirements are met both for his/herself and for all staff.
Performs additional duties as assigned.
