Principal Opto-Mechanical Engineer Raydiance
The Principal Opto-Mechanical Engineer is a hands-on member of a small technical R&D team developing and commercializing the next generation of ultrashort pulse laser systems.
The Opto-Mechanical Engineer is responsible for leading the concept development of the mechanical component and systems design, integration, and test activities. She/he will be working closely with other members of our small interdisciplinary R&D team developing fiber-based infrared laser systems. Responsibilities include:
Drives all initiatives associated with the opto-mechanical engineering of state-of-the-art fiber and free-space optical products and subassemblies. Leads the system concept definition, system requirements, new technology assessments, and evaluation of alternative technical solutions.
Evaluation of mechanical system performance at both the component and system level both via modeling and experimental methods. Leads the revision of designs to minimize changes in later project phases and perform system integration and test activities (DFMA).
Analyze and present test data. Discuss technical results in with technical staff, 3rd party partners, and customers.
Provide mechanical engineering leadership to project teams in the preparation of engineering inputs, cost estimates and schedules for proposals. Initiates and coordinates internal and external project teams, company personnel, and the customer community.
Work directly with laser application engineers and customers to design and integrate custom beam delivery solutions with linear and rotary motion systems.
Promote engineering rigor within the company?s technical team.
Define and drive mechanical engineering best practices with the company?s technical team.
Optimize the supply chain for lower cost, higher quality, and continuous process/product improvement.
Establish project plans and lead technical teams from concept through prototype, and product release.
Take leadership role in the planning and execution of projects, with duties including: task definition, schedule estimation, resource management, progress tracking, and status reporting.
Meet deadlines, sustain superior personal task management, and deliver consistent high performance in both individual and team endeavors.
Ensure team comprehension through excellent written and verbal communications.
Minimum of a Master?s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
15+ years experience in opto-mechanical system design for product development.
12+ years technical leadership experience.
3-5 years experience in technical project leadership.
Experience in execution of all design documents.
The candidate should be CAD expert, well versed in SolidWorks, and have direct prior experience designing for chemical and particulate cleanliness, vibration analysis and testing, structural and thermal analysis, design experience with sheet metal, and geometric dimensioning & tolerancing (ASME Y14.5 preferred). Experience with thermal and structural analysis tools highly desirable.
The candidate must be a fast learner, strong problem solver, and exceptional communicator. She/he must be able to translate ideas into high level design concepts and prototypes. She/he must have a proven ability to understand complex problems and requirements as described by customers, scientific, and engineering staff. The candidate for this position should have deep, relevant experience with many of the specific skill areas listed, as well as a strong interest in growth and learning in all of them:
Extensive expertise and practical experience with robust opto-mechanical component and packaging design solutions plus a demonstrated ability to work within a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers.
Design experience for low cost fabrication method, packaging electronics and electrical modules, cabling and connectors, instrument enclosures.
Experience with design for manufacturability, serviceability and cost. Experience with specifying mechanical, optical and electrical components and working directly with component suppliers on pricing and lead times.
Mechanical analysis and problem solving know-how. Proven track record of solving issues including CTE mismatch, material selection, microscopic material deformations and effects, kinematic design, high precision mounting / alignment methods, environmental effects isolation, and light coupling/redirecting and controlling methodology. Experience and deep knowledge of FMEA methods is highly desirable.
Knowledge of instrumentation to determine resonance performance, stiffness and bandwidth of servo mechanisms. Experience with selection of mechanical, optical and electrical feedback methods preferred.
Technical writing skills having prior experience writing technical reports, operating instructions and user manuals.
Physical and Environmental Conditions
Duties may involve working with laser light, fiber and other potentially hazardous materials.
Employees must wear protective goggles, or glasses when in the proximity of an energized laser.
Employee must wear masks as defined by the specific rules within the work area.
Ability to operate equipment as defined by job.
Lifting, bending, and other physical requirements typical of experimental work in an optics laboratory environment will be required (under 50 pounds).
