Process Controls/Field Services Engineer Coskata

Position Purpose: Position reports to the Sr. Process Control Technology Manager as a member of the Coskata Engineering & Operations team, with an overall focus on Instrument/Process Controls design and field service support for Coskata-licensed commercial plants. The job duties encompass a wide range of activities related to project implementation and include: 1. Design, selection and specification of plant instrumentation for continuous and batch process systems, 2. Adaptation of methods for process measurement and control successfully employed in Coskata R&D to commercial-scale plants, 3. Customer or facility support of process or project issues which may result in travel to the actual plant site for direct field support during mechanical completion and/or commissioning & startup, and 4. Troubleshooting, solving and optimizing process control-related challenges in operating plants with a focus on process control improvements, which will result in improved plant efficiency, operability and reliability. The employee must be able to effectively work as a member of a team in both an engineering design and a plant operations environment, as well as communicate effectively with plant personnel at multiple levels.
A major responsibility of this position is the design, selection and specification of process measurement and control instruments required for Coskata plants.
This position will also have responsibility for direct participation in the mechanical checkout, commissioning and start-up of commercial plants, either owned or licensed by Coskata.
This position will work closely with other Engineering & Operations groups within Coskata throughout the design, engineering, construction and start-up of Coskata process plants.
Assist in the development and articulation of Coskata process control philosophy as related to the appropriate level of process automation and advanced process control for a typical plant.
Review the control system detailed designs being performed for Coskata by selected Process Control System Designers and Integrators
At times act as an interface between the software and hardware vendors selected to provide design and hardware supply for projects being constructed and owned by Coskata (not for licensed projects).
Maintain a strong working knowledge of major control system platforms and new developments in instrumentation and process control.
Perform troubleshooting, inspection, control loop tuning, repair and optimization services as required, on location at the plant site.
Perform plant operator training on best practices for the operations and maintenance of Coskata process plants.
Collect, analyze and report performance data.
Contribute to the development and improvement of operating and service manuals.
Field support or start-up assignments may require extended on-site deployment to plants incorporating Coskata process technology in various parts of U.S. and worldwide, as a member or leader of a plant start-up team
Maintain a high level of customer service during all required interface ? in design and plant operations support mode.
This position is an intermediate-level Engineering & Operations position and will work initially with an experienced Process Controls engineer to become familiar with Coskata technologies, policies, procedures and practices. This initial orientation is expected to require 2-3 months of on-going team/manager support after which the candidate will be expected to move towards a more independent, self-directed work mode as a key member of the engineering team. Team members will be required to work closely together and cooperatively solve critical engineering issues utilizing input and support from other members of the team. Adherence to all safety requirements within the office or field/plant work environments will be absolutely required and the member will be expected to be an active supporter/solver of safety related issues both on and off the job.
This position operates in an office environment, as well as plant environment. In the office, the team member will work with a personal computer. In the plant environment, the team member may be exposed to noise, heat, and other elements both inside and outside. While performing the duties of this position, the team member will be exposed to moving, mechanical parts, dusty conditions, internal and external temperature/weather conditions, and potential exposure to high noise levels and chemicals.
Travel will be required: Driving and/or flying following company policies. The travel requirement is estimated to average around 25%
Specific physical requirements include:
a. Work within a laboratory environment in Warrenville or at plant
b. Occasionally lifting weights of sixty
(60) pounds or less.
c. Climbing several flights of stairs and ladders.
d. Opening valves or adjusting operating equipment with appropriate approvals from
e. Occasionally bending, twisting, and turning while lifting weights of less than fifty (50)
f. Sitting for approximately 90% of the time while working on a personal computer.
g. Walking for two (2) or more miles per day.
h. Occasionally working at heights, in confined spaces, and at temperatures from -20 to
+100 F degrees.
To perform the essential functions of this position successfully, the individual should demonstrate the following competencies:
BS in Chemical Engineering or Electrical Engineering with 3 to 5 years of related experience.
Prior experience in field commissioning and start-up service activities highly desirable.
Knowledge or experience with fundamental principles of bio-fermentation, gasification and membrane processes desirable but not mandatory.
Fundamental understanding of various types of typical process equipment and/or control instrumentation is necessary.
Aptitude for troubleshooting process equipment, instrumentation and control systems is essential.
Good oral, written and presentation skills.
Availability for extended remote assignments - from two to six months for commercial-scale plant startups or post startup engineering support, as necessary
Familiar or experienced with process analyzers, commercially available field instrumentation, DCS control and DCS historian systems.
Knowledge in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook and the ability and willingness to learn new software applications.
Excellent organizational skills, communications skills, the ability to multi-task, and most importantly, the ability to work well in a team.
Required Certifications include: Job specific safety training (by Coskata), OSHA mandated safety training (by Coskata or others).
