Process Development Engineer (PD13-200) Amyris Biotechnologies
THIS JOB HAS EXPIRED Amyris is building an integrated renewable products company using breakthrough science and an innovative business model to address some of our planet?s most daunting problems. Amyris first developed its technology under a non-profit initiative to provide a reliable and affordable source of artemisinin, a highly effective anti-malarial therapeutic and is now applying its industrial synthetic biology platform to provide alternatives to a broad range of petroleum-sourced products. Amyris No Compromise? renewable fuels and chemicals are being designed to perform comparably to, or better than, the products they will replace.
The Applications Development team is seeking a Process Development Engineer with experience in developing purification processes and chemical processes. The position requires the use of experimental data and modeling to provide predictive process capabilities and determine process parameters for scale up. Ideally, experienced from proof of concept at the bench to scale up and manufacturing. Experience in fractional distillation for isolation and purification purposes is preferred. One of the goals of the Applications Development team is to build quality, safety, and cost-efficiency into processes as they are developed, using microbially-derived substrates to produce renewable chemical products. The position requires interactions with several disciplines, including synthetic chemistry, analytical chemistry, process engineering, environmental health & safety, and quality systems. Collaboration is key to the success of moving projects forward with safety as a priority for all Application Development activities.
Personally responsibility for individual as well as co-worker safety and maintaining safety as the highest priority by supporting and reinforcing procedures and policies.
Hands on performance of laboratory, or piloting experiments analyze and interpret data, utilizing VLE curves, flow rates, velocities, equipment parameters, and reaction mechanisms for predictive performance on piloting scale. Provide estimated CAPEX for equipment modifications, and able to generate capital and variable cost estimates for purification and chemical synthetic processes.
Project management of resources, process cost models and timelines. Provide experimental plans to meet process targets such as cost, specifications, efficiency and yield. Provide longer term process development plans for proposed next generation processes to meet customer requirements and cost targets. Manage technology transfer laboratory scale to pilot scale and pilot scale to manufacturing scale.
Develop mass and energy balances for new processes under development. Develop and converge full flowsheet models in Aspen Plus version 7 and above.
Scale up processes safely through pre-hazard assessment and internal safety reviews, using appropriate documentation and thorough data generation for physical properties, stability, heats of reaction, heat transfer, pressure deltas, and off-gassing. Able to engineer risk mitigation with safety stops, vent sizing, appropriate monitoring, PRVs and equipment specifications.
Generate SOPs, Process Development Reports, technology transfers and batch records
Provide critical assessment of process strategy and communicate success probabilities to stakeholders
Skills and requirements:
Minimum B.S. Degree in Chemical Engineering, related discipline with 7+ years of relevant industry experience.
Established experience writing Development Reports, SOP?s and Technology Transfers and transfer of technology to CMOs (deployment a plus).
Hands-on experience with reactor systems and unit operations (10-1000 MT scale, including short path, low vacuum evaporators, pressure reactors, adsorption columns and fractional distillation columns).
Team oriented, with problem solving skills and effective communication skills
Management experience including managing direct reports for a minimum of two years, or leading a project team for a minimum of two years.
