The Department
Manufacturing/Production â€" One of the most critical needs we now have at SpaceX is for Manufacturing/Production engineers. With two vehicles flight proven, we have a $3 billion backlog of sold flights. The next critical phase is proving our ability to build rockets with increasing speed while maintaining quality in order to meet the markets high demand. We are looking to add production engineers throughout the company.
Responsibilities
- Facilitate the production, assembly, testing, and integration of the Falcon 9 Pressure Vessel assemblies.
- Develop the floor layout and production procedures/processes for the vessels and manage the transition of parts and assemblies to a high-volume production line.
- Create and maintain a build schedule that lists all discrete fabrication and assembly tasks. Ensure that all parts are fabricated or purchased at the correct time to facilitate the build schedule.
- Work closely with design engineers, internal machine shops, and external vendors to make parts that are designed for manufacturability and built on schedule.
- Resolve and analyze manufacturing discrepancies and interface with the quality team (resolving issues for design, fabrication, and assembly).
- Run process improvement projects to continuously improve production processes on the shop floor.
- Resource management, planning, coordinating and interfacing with (and impacting/improving) our own home-built Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system.
Requirements
- B.S. or M.S. Degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, Systems, or Manufacturing Engineering or similar discipline.
- 2 - 5+ years' experience in an Automotive, Aviation, or Spacecraft manufacturing environment with a track record of strong achievements.
- Experience with process development, facility and line layouts, PFMEA, Error-Proofing, and Lean Manufacturing.
- Technically well-rounded and displays a proficiency in the basic principles of compressible and incompressible flow, thermodynamics, thermochemistry, mechanics, and materials.
- Must be highly self-motivated and organized with strong written and oral communication skills.
- Must be able to work well in an integrated team including daily interactions with technicians, engineers, and managers.
- Capable of handling multiple projects concurrently in a fast paced environment.
Preferred skills
- Knowledge of metallic or fluid system manufacturing techniques, equipment, and other processes such as: machining, orbital tube welding, tube bending, and x-ray inspection.
- Knowledge in automated test systems for pressure and leak testing using instrumentation such as flow meters, pressure transducers, and thermocouples.
- Experience with Design for Manufacturability and Assembly.
- Experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance (GD&T), Unigraphics (UGS) and Teamcenter CAD, and ERP/PDM systems is desired.
