About the Job
Nexant?s Government Consulting Group, centered in its Washington, DC Office, is seeking to reinforce its in-house proposal generation capabilities by subcontracting some of its editorial review work to an experienced professional editor specializing in USAID proposals with a verifiable successful track record. The aim is to bring a layer of detached editorial scrutiny to select outputs that may gain presentational enhancement by the objective review of an outside Subcontractor. Responsibilities will include proofreading, copy editing, and presentational enhancement, as necessary, of proposals prepared by the Government Consulting Group for prospective clients. The position is part-time with the potential to transition to full-time.
The Government Consulting Group pursues and executes a diverse range of engagements primarily for USAID covering Capacity Building and Transaction Advisory assignments in Emerging Markets. Outputs require the utmost quality in content and in presentation. The Subcontractor is expected to have familiarity from prior similar proposals so as to assist Nexant proposal teams with an objective and critical editorial review of their work to enhance quality and Nexant?s chances for winning engagements.
The Subcontractor will be required to be bound by a Non-Disclosure Agreement for keeping all documentation shared under the strictest confidentiality.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the direction of and in close coordination with the Proposal Manager, the Subcontractor will be responsible for the error-free quality of the presentation of proposals and, inter alia, shall:
Maintain consistency in usage of:
o applicable ?branding? for USAID proposals, with appropriate variations on interim drafts;
o standard language for ?Disclaimers?, with appropriate variations on type of deliverables;
o standard ?house style? with regards to font type and size, spacing, headings, etc.;
o standard usage of stylistic elements such as in-text reference to tables, footnoting, and word usage (e.g. cash flow vs cashflow, Northwest vs. North West, percent vs. %.); and
o standard documentation for Nexant Credentials, Staff CVs, Team Flow Charts, etc. that are regular inputs to proposals submitted by Nexant?s Government Consulting Group.
Proofread proposals to correct for:
o typing mistakes, missing words, and spelling errors;
o grammatical accuracy and proper punctuation;
o formatting with consistency in font type and size, spacing, headings, etc.
o numbering and labeling of chapters, sections, lists, tables, images, drawings, charts, graphs, pictures, etc. for accuracy, consistency, correct positioning and layout, as well as accurate cross-referencing and integration of same in body of the main text; and
o page numbers, table of contents, alignment of pictures and tables, and so on.
Edit proposals for readability and, as necessary:
o rework sentences for style and vocabulary (including removal of colloquialisms);
o question apparent errors and omissions of logic, facts, inferences, or syllogisms;
o flag out missing information or inconsistencies;
o add transitions;
o screen documents for wordiness with economy of words being the banner of clear thinking; and
o ensure overall text, headings, key terms, illustrations, tables, and other contents are presented clearly, effectively, and coherently for maximum visual ease and comprehension.
Execute, at Nexant offices, document processing functions that will include, as necessary and directed by the Proposal Manager, the electronic and multiple hard copy scheduling, production, clearance, finalization, packaging, and delivery to client on time of proposals.
The Subcontractor will liaise with other communication and editing groups in other offices of Nexant, such as New York and San Francisco, on specific tasks on a case by case basis, as necessary, and as directed by Nexant?s Proposal Managers heading tasks for individual deliverables or proposals.
Qualifications
A Bachelor?s Degree in Social Sciences and/or English Literature;
Minimum 15 Years experience in similar work.
A successful and verifiable track record in similar line of work such as journalism or publishing;
Thorough, insightful, and efficient mastery of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Access, and Project);
An excellent eye for detail and meticulous care for word-by-word and line-by-line proofreading;
Ability to work independently and under tight deadlines;
Organizational and problem solving skills with a can-do attitude;
An ability to work within the style of the author but maintain accuracy and standards;
Tactfulness and good interpersonal skills
Additional knowledge in Energy, Finance, Engineering, etc. is a plus;
USAID experience is a plus.
