The Department
Propulsion (Engines) â€" Our Propulsion group brings together some of the brightest minds in the engine business. We currently build more rocket engines than any other organization in the country, furthermore the design and performance parameters of SpaceX engines are notably recognized throughout the industry. Our team built the first human rated engines to see spaceflight since the Space Shuttles Main Engines were built over 30 years ago.
The Job
Responsibilities
- Lead the production, assembly, and testing of Falcon propulsion components
- Create and maintain a build schedule that lists all discrete fabrication and assembly tasks. Ensure that all parts are fabricated or purchased at the correct time to facilitate the build schedule.
- Work closely with design engineers, internal machine shops, and external vendors to make parts that are designed for manufacturability and built on schedule.
- Resolve and analyze manufacturing discrepancies and interface with the quality team (resolving issues for design, fabrication, and assembly).
- Manage the transition of parts and assemblies from development to production.
- Run process improvement projects to continuously improve production processes on the shop floor.
- Support component level testing such as proof and leak testing, fluid flow testing, and functional checkouts.
- Resource management, planning, coordinating and interfacing with (and impacting/improving) our own home-built Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system.
Requirements
- B.S. in Aerospace, Mechanical, Systems, or Manufacturing Engineering or similar discipline.
- Technically well-rounded and displays a proficiency in the basic principles of compressible and incompressible flow, thermodynamics, thermochemistry, mechanics, and materials.
- 2 - 5+ years' experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Process development, facility and line layouts, PFMEA, Error-Proofing, Lean Manufacturing.
- Experience with Design for Manufacturability and Assembly.
- Passion for problem solving at any level for the good of the company.
- Capable of handling multiple projects concurrently in a fast paced environment.
- Must be highly self-motivated and organized with strong written and oral communication skills.
- Must be able to work well in an integrated team including daily interactions with technicians, engineers, and managers.
- M.S. Degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, Systems, or Manufacturing Engineering or similar discipline preferred.
- Design and analysis (Finite Element Analysis (FEA)/structural/static loads) experience.
- Experience with liquid spacecraft and/or aircraft propulsion systems.
- Experience with taking products from development into production.
- Knowledge in automated test systems for pressure and leak testing using instrumentation such as flow meters, pressure transducers and thermocouples.
- Pareto Analysis, Root Cause and Corrective Action experience.
- Creation of dashboards and schedules for visibility to achieve and maintain organizational goals.
- Labview experience is a plus.
