Quality Engineering Manager Zipcar

The QE group leads the ongoing development and improvement of the continuous integration and deployment pipeline. The QE Manager is responsible for a group of 6 to 10 Quality Engineers and specialists. Zipcar is looking to hire engineers interested in quality as an engineering practice. In short, we want engineers who like to build tools for other engineers.
The QE team is involved at all stages of the software development process, from requirements definition to production deployment. Zipcar uses many different test types at various stages within the pipeline to ensure quality and accuracy of requirements. The QE Manager will work with other groups such as Product, Engineering, and Agile Coaches to continually improve our engineering practice.
At Zipcar our products reach all the way from customized hardware/firmware deployed in cars on the street, to consumer mobile apps, to hybrid application stacks, to backend database server clusters. Our QE group contains general purpose engineers as well as hardware and database specialists. The QE Manager must be able to coordinate the activities of all of these areas of expertise and present a total end-to-end quality picture that can be used to manage risk and target improvement efforts.
While quality is a shared responsibility across all groups, the QE group takes special leadership in ensuring quality as it relates to member experience. QE helps to manage beta testers by providing them with release notes and test scripts; collecting beta tester feedback; triaging beta tester feedback with the help of Product, Engineering, and Agile groups; and ensuring beta tester feedback is verified and actionable for engineers.

The QE Manager must be able to inspire a passion for quality within Engineering and make quality a priority for all groups that participate in the delivery of applications and services to our members.
Recruit, select, train, and manage a team of 6 to 10 Quality Engineers and specialists
Provide strategic level quality metrics and reports that indicate the level of systemic quality in all of our product lines
Develop and implement strategies to mitigate systemic quality problems
Work cross functionally with Product, Engineers, DevOps, and Agile Coaches to ensure quality is a priority throughout the development process
Take ownership of the continuous integration pipeline, ensuring hooks for various test types are in place, populated, executed, and reported at critical points within the development process
Ensure QE demonstrates best testing practices to Engineering (TDD, BDD, Unit, Integration, Contract, etc., tests)
Ensure QE is providing regular training on testing practices to Engineering
Document all testing practices
Work closely with Security and the Compliance groups to set Definition of Done policies that ensure Secure, Compliant, and Quality code is delivered to production as a matter of practice and culture
Develop and training budget for the QE group
Coordinate and manage beta testers for mobile products ensuring bug reports from the field are delivered to Engineering as verified and actionable work
Minimum 6 years? experience in a professional Software Quality Assurance environment, 2 years in a leadership capacity
Extensive experience in software development process automation, and a desire to prioritize automation
Experience with Ruby, Java, and JVM languages, Go, Jenkins, Jira, Confluence
Self-motivated professional who is able to motivate their team to exceed expectations
Proven track record of setting and achieving aggressive quality benchmarks

Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment
Superior planning and organization skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Bachelor?s degree in a related discipline or equivalent
