The purpose of this position is to drive the scientific management, planning, and execution of clinical research projects and to support the development and incorporation of new clinical biomarkers.
Duties and Responsibilities
Manages the scientific aspects of clinical projects and associated experiments involving rare cell enrichment and subsequent molecular analyses.
Utilizes existing, as well as newly developed, microfluidic device technology to isolate rare cell such as circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from blood, and analyzes these using immunocytochemical or immunofluoresence techniques, microscopy, quantitative image analysis, flow cytometry, and/or RNA/DNA-based assays.
Works closely with project managers and resource managers to lead scientific project deliverables and drive assay/product development, project design, execution, and report generation.
Communicates effectively with personnel at all levels to accomplish goals.
Participates in scientific and operational process improvement efforts as required.
Generates scientific abstracts, publications, and grant applications.
Performs quality control on laboratory processes, data generation and analysis, and compiled internal and external reports.
Investigates and corrects unexpected events.
Prepares project work scopes.
Participates in R&D and Method Development activities as needed.
Adheres to CLIA and GCP requirements as appropriate, SOPs, and study protocols.
Adheres to safety protocols.
Assures adequate control of processes, supplies, reagents, and project specimens.
Processes human blood and tissue samples for clinical research testing.
Efficiently uses time and resources to accomplish required tasks.
Provides SOP and protocol training to lab team members as required.
Demonstrates the ability to perform all duties and tasks at a level of proficiency above that of a Post-Doctoral Scientist.
Qualifications and minimum requirements include:
Education and Experience ? MD or Ph.D. in Science, Biology, or related field with a minimum of 2 years post-doc experience in an academic or industrial laboratory, or MS degree with a minimum of 8 years of academic or industrial laboratory experience.
Professional Certification ? for specialized testing methodologies or instrumentation as applicable (e.g. ASCP)
Publications ? Record of manuscript publication in peer reviewed journals is preferred.
Specialized Knowledge ?
Translational research experience
Strong expertise in at least two out of three areas is required:
Immunocytochemical, immunofluorescent, or immunohistochemistry applications and microscopy;
RNA and DNA based molecular techniques, such as nucleic acid extraction, PCR, genotyping, sequencing, RT-PCR, qPCR, digital PCR
Knowledge of automated laser scanning cytometry or other automated microscopy platforms is preferred.
Cell culture experience is required.
Experience with rare cell analysis including Circulating Tumor Cells and/or stem cells is a strong plus.
Skills ? Good organizational, experimental design, planning and execution, and advanced troubleshooting skills are required. Individual must be proficient at documenting, analyzing data and generating detailed reports. Good computer skills with mid to advanced level in MS Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) are required; experience with Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Photoshop and specialized image analysis software is preferred.
Abilities ? must demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills. Must be able to communicate effectively with clients, scientists, lab personnel, project managers, and company management, contributing to cross-functional activities in a matrixed environment. Must be able to work under pressure and multitask to meet project deadlines.
Position requires occasional long hours, work on the evenings, weekends, and holidays along with the possibility of domestic and international travel in order to support business and/or scientific objectives.
Although not physically demanding, reasonably good health is required for this demanding position.
