Job Description
At Synthetic Genomics, Inc., we are dedicated to developing and commercializing genomic-driven solutions to address global challenges. We are currently seeking a Scientist in Analytical Chemistry to join our fast-growing, dynamic and collaborative team in La Jolla, CA.
Required Skills
The Scientist of Analytical Chemistry will be defining and implementing novel analytical methods to a range of scales of measurement from small biological samples through to finished products
Preparing and analyzing samples using a diverse range of analytical instrumentation including GC/FID, GC/MS, HPLC/UV, GPC, HPLC/MS and MS/MS for both identification and quantitation of analytes
Providing detailed, optimized and validated protocol write-ups
Bringing high-throughput MS and NMR methods for analysis which support lipidomics, proteomics, and metabolomics of complex organisms
Contribute significantly to overall success of science program(s), on-going projects, critical patents, grants or scientific publications.
Must be able to demonstrate successful management and mentoring of direct reports in a fast-paced environment
Consistently demonstrate initiative in implementing projects and/or necessary work.
Develops understanding of company?s projects requirements and how they affect SGI?s business and products
May collaborate and share ideas with other scientists.
Required Experience
Requires a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physical Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry or other relevant subject with a minimum of 0-5 years hands-on post-degree experience in analytical chemistry in an industrial setting
Demonstrated, state-of-the-art, technical capabilities, particularly with research level chromatographic separations (LC&GC), quantitative MS of simultaneously targeted multiple analytes, accurate-mass MS, MSn, modern extraction techniques, small-scale purification strategies, NMR, and FTIR
A strong diverse knowledge of biochemistry, organic chemistry and physical chemistry
Experience with analysis of biological samples (e.g. lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, natural products) is highly desirable
Experience with modern data acquisition and analysis software with chemometrics and statistics. Direct experience with Agilent and Chromeleon software is highly desirable
Proven ability to maintain and troubleshoot analytical equipment to maintain high standards of performance
Critical thinking and proven problem-solving skills
Prior experience managing reporting personnel in a research or industry setting
Experience working with external contractors, such as partner companies or external laboratories involved in chemical analysis
Must be able to work independently and flexibly and to adapt to changing priorities in interdisciplinary teams
