Job Description
At Synthetic Genomics, Inc., we are dedicated to developing and commercializing genomic-driven solutions to address global challenges. We are currently seeking a Scientist/Associate Staff Scientist in Photosynthesis to join our fast-growing, dynamic and collaborative team in La Jolla, CA.
The Scientist/Associate Staff Scientist of Photosynthesis will lead efforts in planning and implementing experiments using genetic manipulation and analyses, including advanced omics technologies (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics), working toward improved photosynthetic light use efficiency of algae for the production and commercialization of fuels and chemicals. The successful candidate will have extensive experience in microbial molecular biology, protein biochemistry, transcriptomics, proteomics and bioinformatics data analysis
Required Skills
The Associate Staff Scientist will work with their supervisor and other scientists contributing significant intellectual input into the design of experiments, employing advanced omics approaches, aimed at dissecting molecular mechanisms associated with light use efficiency in photosynthetic algae.
In collaboration with multidisciplinary groups, carefully execute laboratory experiments, including growth of photosynthetic microbes under meticulously defined conditions, sampling and extraction of nucleic acids and proteins, including subcellular fractionation of eukaryotic algae.
Work closely with bioinformaticians to analyze and compare large data sets from various advanced omics experiments, summarize and present data and independently re-design further hypothesis-driven experiments exploiting extracted information.
Employ molecular tools to generate and characterize recombinant strains of eukaryotic algae.
Contribute significantly to overall success of science program(s), on-going projects, critical patents, grants or scientific publications.
Instruct and provide guidance to Sr. Research Associates and Research Associates.
Consistently demonstrate initiative in implementing projects and/or necessary work.
Develops understanding of companys external customers needs and how they affect SGIs business and products
May collaborate and share ideas with other scientists.
Required Experience
Bachelors Degree in Life Sciences or a related field is required (typically a BS with 8-12 yrs relevant experience or a MS with 6 yrs relevant experience or a Ph.D. 0-4 yrs experience)
Broad and detailed experience with state-of-the-art molecular biology procedures and tools is required.
Working knowledge and experience with modern nucleic acid sequence analysis and other bioinformatics tools is required.
Experience working with eukaryotic algae or other microbial photo-autotrophs is an advantage.
Knowledge of photosynthetic processes and techniques for monitoring photosynthesis desirable (chlorophyll fluorescence, gas exchange) is desirable.
Advanced data analysis skills. Demonstrated ability to prepare & present data both in written & oral format in a concise, clear manner.
Demonstrated & proven ability to develop & implement new experimental methods.
Strong communication skills (written and oral)
