A unique opportunity in the Biotechnology Department
The Biotechnology Department is seeking a High Throughput Screening Scientist to develop, improve and support high throughput screening capabilities for strain development and selection. A specific focus will be on the design and optimization of robust ways to defined relevant criteria, implement the corresponding assays and analyze the huge amount of data generated.
Hierarchically dependant from the Head of the Biotechnology Department, and reporting to the Amyris/Total Alliance Manager, the High Throughput Screening Scientist will be collaborating with both TOTAL and Amyris Scientists on a daily basis. Experiments will be performed mainly in the laboratories of Amyris in Emeryville, CA. The principal responsibilities of the High Throughput Screening Scientist will be to:
Design and distribute tools that improve data-driven decisions from high-throughput datasets.
Contribute to the design of experiment and interpret the datasets generated with high-throughput assays.
Develop, deploy, run and monitor new or improved high-throughput screening models and assays to evaluate strain performances and identify the best performers.
Improve assays by performing advanced statistical analysis of complex datasets to identify key assay factors.
Conduct and quantitatively evaluate microtiter-scale fermentations in high- and medium- throughput formats.
Liaise with the industry and universities to identify key technologies to improve the high throughput screening capabilities.
Propose innovative projects using risk/reward assessments.
Report regularly to Amyris and to TOTAL Headquarters on the research activity and findings.
Applications are invited from candidates with a strong scientific background related to biology and experience with computing tools to handle data.
High scientific level (PhD or equivalent experience) in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Synthetic or Systems Biology, Biophysics, or related discipline.
Knowledge and experience:
Minimum 2 years of post-doctoral or industrial experience in generating, manipulating, and analyzing complex data sets to support biotechnology projects.
Experience using statistical packages, data visualization tools, and scripting languages (R, JMP, MATLAB, Mathematica, Python, C++, F#, Spotfire) for data manipulation, analysis and mining.
Ability to retrieve and manipulate data from SQL or Oracle databases.
Experience in high-throughput screening or assay development, preferably working with microbes.
Knowledge of microbial physiology or fermentation.
A proven track-record of innovative research through achievements, publications and/or patents.
Excellent English language skills; good French language skills is a plus.
Ability to critically analyze results, present data and conclusions, and make decisions that drive research progress.
