We are looking for a Scientist ? Metabolic Engineering, based in Englewood, Colorado. The Scientist
will provide subject matter expertise in metabolic engineering, microbial physiology, kinetic/stoichiometric
modeling and metabolic modeling to apply across yeast biotechnology R&D projects for the production
of target chemicals.
? PhD in Chemical or Biochemical Engineering with emphasis on Metabolic Engineering or Quantitative
Physiology or equivalent;
? 3-5 years of demonstrated abilities in metabolic engineering;
? Technical success in developing and commercializing fermentation biocatalysts;
? Demonstrated successful production of metabolites using metabolically engineered microorganisms,
including yeasts and bacteria;
? Ability to analyze and interpret fermentation data, and identify critical issues in the development of
new microbial production strains, which will provide direction for strain development efforts;
? At least 3-5 years of demonstrated critical thinking skills & use of the scientific method.
? Demonstrated track record of soft skills that enable success in collaboration with multidisciplinary
? Excellent verbal and written communications skills; effective listening skills; ability to communicate
well with scientists having different academic backgrounds;
? Ability to solve problems using input from scientists within the different teams at Gevo (e.g. metabolic
engineering, strain development, process engineering);
? Can work as a team player in order to accomplish larger objectives;
? Holds self and others accountable;
? Can receive and give constructive performance feedback.
? Thoughtfully and critically analyze lab data and literature to formulate and test the critical hypotheses
which must be addressed to improve our yeast for the production of chemicals and fuels;
? Work collaboratively with molecular biologists, microbiologists, geneticists, chemical engineers, and
fermentation specialists to share insights and ideas for purposes of accelerating organizational
? Help shape project plans to improve yeast performance;
? Bring insight gained through analysis of all relevant data (both in-house and outside literature) into
metabolic engineering projects;
? Integration of theoretical and practical aspects of fermentation technology into the metabolic
? Kinetic and stoichiometric modeling.
