General Description: A Venture Capital-funded, start-up biotechnology company seeks an energetic Microbiology Scientist with a strong background in bacterial genomics to become part of a laboratory group in drug discovery efforts based on host-microbe interactions utilizing metagenomic information from gut microbiome experiments.
Education requirements: The candidate will have a BA/BS with a Ph.D. degree (or equivalent) in Microbiology with a minimum of 1-3 years of postdoctoral training.
Additional experience in a biotech or pharmaceutical setting is desired.
Required attributes: Successful candidate will have a strong background in microbial community dynamics and microbial ecology. An interest in microbiome research as it relates to bacterial-host interaction is also desired. The successful candidate will have a broad background in bacterial culture and in fundamentals of bacterial genomics and taxonomic classification. The candidate will also be facile with methodologies in microarray- and sequencing-based classification and quantification of various bacterial taxa in biological samples from mammals (metagenomics). The candidate will have familiarity with plasmid preparation, DNA and RNA isolation, PCR techniques, library construction and familiarity with state-of-the-art sequencing technology.
Other desired traits:
Bioinformatic analysis algorithms and database management are desired.
Familiarity with innate immune response mechanisms and pathways is also desired.
Familiarity with linking the power of genomics to the drug discovery process is also desirable.
The candidate must show a desire to utilize his/her skills in microbial genetics to discover drugs for several diseases known to be affected by host-microbiome interactions, such as IBD, IBS, as well as metabolic disease, and others.
The ability to work as a team member and a willingness to become part of a fast-paced, entrepreneurial biotech atmosphere is a must. Candidate must portray an ability to collaborate with academicians and other strategic partners in drug discovery efforts.
The successful Scientist candidate will possess great interpersonal skills and demonstrate productivity in a team of 3-5 people at various experience levels. This must coexist with an understanding of the general needs of the business side of the organization.

General Description: A fast-paced and innovative venture capital funded biotechnology company seeks an energetic and creative metagenomics scientist to join our team. We are looking for a creative scientist with experience in the design, planning, processing and interpretation of microbial community experiments, with demonstrated success in metagenomics and/or metatranscriptomics.
Background: Second Genome is designing, executing and analyzing metagenomic experiments in the fields of infection, inflammation, and metabolic disease, to understand and explore the role of the microbiome in health and disease. The successful candidate for this position will likely have a Ph.D. degree in Microbiology, Bioinformatics, Computer Sciences, Statistics, Data Science or related fields with one or more publications demonstrating expertise in metagenomics. An ability to innovate is an absolute must, therefore we are looking for a microbiome scientist who has advanced the field with novel biological interpretations, methods or optimizations. Biotech or pharma experience is desired but not a requisite.
Assist R&D group and external collaborators in the design and interpretation of metagenomics experiments.
Incorporate findings from internal and external metagenomic datasets to generate and test novel biological hypotheses.
Present findings internally and externally, integrate observations from the entire R&D team and execute follow-up analyses.
Filter and prioritize observations in terms of therapeutic importance, likelihood of reproducibility and alignment with company?s focus on the role of microbiota in health and disease.
Define and create standardized reports for summarizing findings.
Assist Study Manager with patient and rodent metadata curation.
Process and interpret metagenome and metatransciptome data from raw sequencing output.
Adapt and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for bioinformatics pipelines.
Implement Quality Control measures to ensure accurate interpretation.
Assess and adopt reference databases for annotation of shotgun metagenomic reads.
Manage bioinformatics support team in organizing sequencing data and executing SOPs.
Process and interpret 16S rRNA gene data from hybridizations and sequencing output.
Strong background in analysis of community microbial dynamics and appreciation of complex microbiomes as an ecological system.
Knowledge and experience in inflammation, immune response, mucosal biology or related fields.
Ability to manage multiple fast-paced projects simultaneously.
A contagious excitement for large-scale data analysis and interpretation.
Conversant in gut microbiome research and experience presenting orally at conferences.
Ability to evaluate functional capacity of a microbiome by comparison of sequencing data to gene orthologs and to KEGG or MetaCyc metabolic pathways.
Adept at taxonomic summarization of metagenomic data sets using multiple methods.
Experience using mothur, QIIME, greengenes, RDP, silva or related 16S rRNA gene analysis tools and databases.
Comfortable in the statistical analysis of datasets in R, SPSS, or related programming environment.
Proficient in Linux and OSX command line execution.
Advanced abilities in computer scripting languages such as python, ruby, bash, perl, etc.
Conversant in parameters affecting speed, specificity and sensitivity of popular alignment algorithms such as BLAST, tBLASTn, BLAT, usearch, mapx, etc.
Ability to communicate and proofread in English.
Background in therapeutics discovery.
Microbial ecology in humanized gnotobiotic mammals.
SQL database management and queries.
Deploying and maintaining resources on cloud services such as Amazon?s EC2, RDS, and S3.
Source code revision control such as SVN, git, or related systems.
Computational classification and machine learning.
Web application maintenance.
