Job Description
At Synthetic Genomics, Inc., we are dedicated to developing and commercializing genomic-driven solutions to address global challenges. We are currently seeking a Scientist in Strain Development to join our fast-growing, dynamic and collaborative team in La Jolla, CA.
Required Skills
The Scientist is responsible for the technical leadership, design and execution of innovative experimental strategies to improve microorganisms for the production and commercialization of food products.
The successful candidate will have extensive experience in microbial physiology, molecular biology, protein biochemistry, transcriptomics, proteomics and bioinformatics data analysis.
Enhance biocatalyst properties to improve product specificity and yield using directed engineering approaches.
Employ molecular tools to characterize improved strains.
Use strong quantitative analyses to provide insight into key findings and guide experimental planning.
Employ advanced ?omics? technologies and work closely with bioinformaticians to analyze data sets; summarize and present data to inform experimental hypotheses and design.
Work closely and effectively with Discovery and Process Development Team to transition leads from discovery through improvement to scale up.
Contribute significantly to overall success of science program(s), by advancing project goals and ensuring timely completion of project objectives.
Participate in writing critical patents, standard operating procedures and scientific publications.
Perform comprehensive literature reviews, summarize and present as required.
Instruct and provide guidance to Sr. Research Associates and Research Associates.
Consistently demonstrate initiative and follow-through in implementing projects and tasks.
Develop understanding of company?s external customer?s needs and how they affect SGI?s business and products.
Required Experience
Requires a Ph.D. in Bioengineering, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, or related discipline with 2-5 yrs experience.
A proven record of modifying microorganisms using state-of-the-art directed engineering approaches, molecular biology procedures and tools is requirement.
Working knowledge and experience with bioinformatics tools is required.
Knowledge of fermentation physiology is required, phototrophic physiology is an advantage.
Experience with chemostats, turbidostats, and other fermentation platforms is an advantage.
Familiarity with flux analyses is an advantage.
Advanced data analysis and presentation via written & oral format in a concise, clear manner is essential.
