DTS R&D is seeking a Senior Audio R&D Engineer to join a team of audio enthusiasts and experts to create and perform R&D experiments to evaluate future spatial audio post-processing technologies and to engineer state-of-the-art sound room facilities. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, an expert in sound system design and troubleshooting, skilled in critical listening, and very enthusiastic about high-quality audio. We are looking for someone who likes to collaborate with others, has excellent written and spoken communication skills, is very detail-oriented and driven to solve problems, and enjoys being a key contributor in a vibrant working atmosphere.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
?Responsible for setup and execution of proof of concept demonstrations associated with R&D product roadmaps.
?Design and configure high-end multichannel sound systems and create custom control software using Max/MSP, AudioMulch, Touch OSC, etc. Automate demo system configurations to enable easy use via graphical touch interfaces on mobile devices (tablets, iOS/Android devices, etc.)
?Perform acoustic measurements and calibration tasks to prep for R&D experiments. Collect and analyze captured data using Matlab and DSP knowledge.
?Create test signals and content specific to particular R&D algorithms. Use varied content to evaluate and report on audible strengths and weaknesses of algorithms using critical listening skills. Mix, edit, reformat, and post-produce audio/video content when necessary.
?Program VST plugins in C/C++ for purposes of bass management, speaker EQ, level-calibration, etc. in support of the R&D sound rooms as requested.
?Author and distribute detailed technical diagrams, documentation, and troubleshooting procedures pertaining to sound room equipment and facilities.
?Conduct expert-level analysis and training on troubleshooting in audio labs and sound rooms when requested by DTS technical staff.
?Research, specify, and acquire necessary tools and audio/video equipment for R&D labs and on-going maintenance, working with outside vendors to negotiate prices and develop support relationships.
Required Education and Experience
Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Music/Audio Engineering, or a related field with 5 years of experience working on audio processing, sound system design, speaker calibration and measurement, critical listening tasks, and content creation. Proficiency with Matlab and an understanding of DSP algorithms is necessary for data collection and analysis tasks. Experience designing software-controlled multichannel sound systems and detailed knowledge of consumer and pro-audio hardware is required. Familiarity with digital audio workstation software is required. Excellent written and oral communication skills are necessary as they will be exercised consistently. An interest in and understanding of spatial audio is highly desired. Formal training or coursework in these areas is a bonus as well.
?Direct and manage outside contractors/technicians and work with other internal departments to determine sound room facility needs and deliver appropriate solutions in a timely manner.
?Must possess excellent computer skills, including troubleshooting issues on Windows and Mac platforms (device drivers, audio interface compatibility, known issues, etc.).
?Programming in Matlab for data collection and analysis.
?Experience using graphical audio programming frameworks such as AudioMulch, Max/MSP, or PureData is preferred.
?Knowledge of C/C++ for VST plugin programming is preferable.
?Knowledge of control interface programming and associated network communications protocols (OSC, MIDI, UDP, TCP/IP, etc.) is highly desired.
?Proficiency with DAW software and VST hosts including ProTools, Nuendo, and/or Reaper.
?Proficiency in Microsoft Visio, OmniGraffle, or similar software to author detailed technical diagrams.
?In-depth knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Other Skills & Abilities:
?Demonstrated interest and passion for audio.
?Understanding of digital signal processing and audio processing algorithm concepts.
?Knowledge and experience designing robust audio hardware/software systems is required.
?Excellent hardware and software troubleshooting skills pertaining to audio and video equipment.
?Demonstrated ability to multi-task and work with very little supervision.
?Strong leadership, teamwork, and project-management skills.
?Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to author and edit detailed technical documentation.
?Critical listening skills and ability to judge audio quality is desired.
?Knowledge of content-creation, studio-recording, and post-production methods is a plus.
