Job Summary:
The Senior Chemical Process Engineer will assist in the optimization of existing prototype battery processes and lead scale up of powder blending, coating and liquid/solid reaction processes. The Senior Chemical Process Engineer will be responsible for the establishment of capable processes, specification through commissioning of capital equipment, optimization of equipment / processes and project management.
This successful candidate will work under the Engineering Manager and work with Manufacturing, Technical Engineering, Maintenance, R&D and Facilities to achieve objectives either as a team leader, team member or individual technical contributor.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Develop large scale chemical and mixing production processes from prototype or lab processes.
Design, specify and commission moderate to large scale chemical and mixing processes, equipment and instrumentation.
Create and conduct test validation plans to qualify new or improved materials, processes, equipment or products
Construct and execute controlled experiments (including DOE and Gage R&R) to address yield, quality and equipment issues; and drive solutions into a production environment.
Manage small to large capital projects to deliver needed results, budget and schedule.
Provide oversight of contractors and maintenance personnel working on assigned projects
Support established manufacturing processes and equipment
Establish and document manufacturing methods, processes, equipment and training.
Independently research and implement innovative solutions to technical problems
Demonstrate safety leadership particularly with chemical operations (gas generation, pressure vessels, exothermic reactions, corrosive materials, etc.) in both day to day activities and by incorporation in process /equipment designs
Lead or participate in safety reviews sch as HAZOP which includes providing technical assistance with combustion issues, dust explosion risks, cross contamination of chemicals, etc.
Assist as necessary in implementing environmental improvement initiatives particularly with respect to VOC emissions, pollutants identification, effluent control, neutralization of caustics, etc.
Educate and train operations and maintenance personnel to facilitate understanding of new or modified processes and/or equipment.
Apply leadership skills to effect process changes in a team environment

Minimum Qualifications:
BS Degree in Chemical Engineering; MS Degree in Chemical Engineering preferred
5-10 year of chemical engineering experience in a manufacturing environment
Significant experience in chemical process scale up.
Experience in powder mixing, solid/liquid reaction and reclamation processes
Strong technical and analytical skills with the ability to solve complex problems and to innovate
Competence in application of DOE, SPC, and Six Sigma tools for problem solving, process definition and improvements
Experience in design, specification and commissioning of large scale automated chemical processing equipment, piping and control instrument systems
Good verbal, written, computer, and organizational skills
Strong attention to detail and deadline oriented
Project management experience
Previous experience in environmental permitting is desirable
Previous experience/certification in lean manufacturing, 5S and/or Six Sigma desirable
Domestic and international travel to suppliers, trade shows and other sites will be required on a variable basis.
