Job Description
Amyris seeks an experienced commercial and transactional attorney able to assume primary responsibility for selected areas of legal representation, reporting to the General Counsel. The attorney will work closely with members of Amyris? in-house legal team, outside counsel, and multiple client groups.
The candidate should be passionate about new technologies and have significant experience drafting and negotiating complex transactions for biotech/life sciences, industrial chemical and/or consumer products companies. He/she must be able to manage complex transactions with extensive patent and know-how licensing components and also have familiarity with joint ventures, strategic partnering and collaboration arrangements. The candidate should demonstrate an ability to manage less complex deals, such as manufacturing, distribution and supply arrangements, independently. The attorney may also be involved in managing and negotiating government research grants and supply agreements. Like all Amyris attorneys, he/she will be willing to pitch in wherever necessary in meeting Amyris? ambitious goals and must be flexible and willing to work extended hours when necessary to complete projects in a timely fashion. The ideal candidate will be comfortable doing a significant amount of original drafting, with minimal support from outside counsel, and will be interested in learning about complex technology and the business and legal norms of foreign jurisdictions.
In addition to transactional duties, the candidate should be comfortable supporting and interpreting existing company collaborations, obligations and policies, and educating clients and colleagues. The right candidate will be comfortable providing discrete legal advice on regulatory issues, sales and marketing, and alliance management. Providing strategic business and legal advice to develop a comprehensive, long-term approach to our relationships with key partners is essential.
Requirements
Strong academic background, including JD from a top tier U.S. law school
5 to 12 years of experience in a top law firm and/or in a strong in-house legal department, with an emphasis on technology transactions
Licensed to practice law in California or be registered as in-house counsel
Ability to travel roughly 20%, both nationally and internationally
Excellent ability to issue spot and integrate legal advice with business goals
Keen legal and business instincts
Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate concisely
Extremely strong interpersonal skills including maturity, creativity and a high energy level
Team-oriented and able to interact effectively and influence peers and all levels of management
Proactive, strategic, solutions-oriented, client-focused, ethical counselor who helps drive business excellence in a complex and changing business environment.
