We are looking for a Senior Fermentation Scientist, based in Englewood, Colorado. The Senior
Fermentation Scientist will interact across the company with the research and development teams
through the commercial operations team to develop, transfer and optimize technology for the production
of biofuels. The position is a key technical position in the company and must be comfortable with scaleup and scale-down of technology in a commercial plant operation. The position will work indirectly with
the metabolic engineering group to develop and characterize new strains. The position will directly
manage the development of commercial plant operations, management of cleaning and sterility in plant
operations, improvement of seed management and all aspects of the commercial technology
development and operations for biofuels production. Supervision skills are necessary as well as project
management and communications skills. The incumbent is expected to provide a high level of expertise,
and make recommendations to the team in addition to contributing original ideas that could become
projects. Strong emphasis on providing data analysis and technology management is essential.
? M.S. or Ph.D. in Engineering or related field with equivalent experience.
? Industrial plant experience 3-5 years.
? Demonstrated successful scale-up and scale-down of fermentation processes using metabolically
? Experience in collecting and analyzing data from laboratory and plant operations to improve
production including yields, mass balances, etc.
? Demonstrated knowledge of fermentation process economics.
? Ability to troubleshoot fermentation problems based on experience and a broad knowledge base
? Ability to use data mining techniques to identify areas of operations improvement
? Proven experience in project management and delivering results within timelines.
? Experience in supporting metabolic engineering of strains, providing information for improving
performance and applying that information
? Specialized process knowledge of fermentation principles, CIP of operations, basic control and PC
? Statistical design and its application
? Preferred 2-5 years of supervisory experience
? Demonstrates curiosity and imagination in identifying and applying new ideas
? Ability to identify critical issues.

? Work with the engineering project teams to design, specify and install fermentation equipment in
plant and laboratory operations.
? Set up, execute and document experiments in the lab and plant operations. Work with peers and
management to define pertinent expe4riments, develop protocols, collect and analyze data within a
? Collect, process and organize data and report results including monthly operations outputs. Work
with the analytical team and operations team to identify and develop protocols, review results for
anomalies and ensure analytical information is valid and useful.
? Utilize experience and observations to capture knowledge from experiments, and communicate the
knowledge to colleagues.
? Conduct troubleshooting experiments, assist with training new employees, and assist with supply
chain logistics and raw materials specifications.
? Study alternative medium sources/options, process design and configuration scheme to support
future plant operations in exploring alternative process flow designs.
? Characterize issues with the upstream processes that can impact downstream processes.
? Search for ways to continuously improve techniques and procedures.
? Contribute to a focused and productive research team as a member of an interdisciplinary group.
? Work with legal counsel to protect and enrich the intellectual property portfolio of the projects.
? Independently apply a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions,
products and problems. Add to and maintain a broad knowledge of state of the art principles and
