Marrone Bio Innovations (MBI) is a global provider of natural products serving the ever expanding agricultural and water markets. Venture backed and headquartered in Davis, California, the company focuses on discovering, developing, and marketing natural pest management products for the effective control of pests, weeds, plant diseases, and invasive species.
Marrone Bio Innovations is seeking a Formulation Chemist with experience related to our field of business. He/she will be part of our team to establish and improve the manufacturing processes of our products.
Responsibilities and Duties
Designs and develops formulation processes at lab and commercial scale, as well as storage stable biopesticide products, through the use of natural product actives and NOP compliant inerts, for the agricultural and water quality markets.
Investigates, develops, optimizes, and implements new formulation technologies.
Carries out discovery and evaluation of new or improved processes and ingredients, and identifies their benefits to a wide variety of formulations.
Designs and conducts stability studies and product testing procedures. Key evaluations include in house efficacy, microbial, physico-chemical testing (pH/conductivity, density, viscosity, dispersion, particle size, emulsion/suspension, etc.), compatibility testing (container, tank mix, etc.), as well as ASTM and CIPAC methods.
Facilitates transition of experimental products to full commercial production such that cost, quantity, robustness, performance, stability, and safety requirements are met.
Participates in technical transfer of formulation processes and data to contract manufacturing facilities and collaborators, including site visits.
Produces and tracks product for process development, field trials, and scale-up.
Supports technical field development and sales team efforts.
Responsible for strategic and scientific planning together with other process development Fermentation and Downstream Processing functions in R&D and Manufacturing to improve processes and solve problems.
Interacts with the various Microbiology, BioAssay, and Chemistry groups to troubleshoot and resolve technical hurdles.
Identifies and defines problems, promptly proposes efficient plans to address these problems, and then leads the team to execute these plans.
Provides ongoing analysis of competitor products.
Stays current in the field of formulation to learn new technologies, techniques, and assays in formulation development.
Represents Company at domestic and international meetings.
Represents Company to suppliers and vendors on proposed formulations, designs, manufacturing processes, and procurement of necessary commercial materials.
Prepares and maintains laboratory notebooks, technical reports, summaries, protocols, and methods for the development of company?s biopesticide products, according to Company?s policies. Adheres to the Company?s IP guidelines.
Purchases, assembles, and maintains testing and formulation equipment.
Maintains a clean, organized, and safe working environment.
Ph.D. degree in Formulations, Chemistry, Colloid and Surface Science, Chemical Engineering, Food Chemistry, or related field with a minimum of 4 years of relevant industrial work experience or a M.S. or B.S. degree with additional years of experience.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities?
Expertise in the development of bench scale and manufacturing scale agricultural formulations.
Experience in the technical transfer of formulation processes to contract manufacturing facilities.
Knowledge and application of DOE (StatEase Design Expert, Minitab, or other relevant software).
Experience in the production of a variety of successful solid and liquid formulations.
Desirable experience with colloids, surface science, microbial derived-products, plant-derived products, biopesticides and dehydration technologies.
Ability to carry out of the following procedures is desirable: Rheometry, calorimetry, particle size analysis, gravimetric analysis, microscopy, sieving, blending/mixing, high shear mixing, wet/dry milling, extrusion, lyophilization, spray drying and drum drying, spray coating.
Knowledge of ingredient requirements of regulated agricultural pesticide products in North America and the European Community and, in particular, those pertaining to the National Organic Program (USDA) preferred.
Proficiency in writing technical reports and presentations.
Use of project management tools (Microsoft project) preferred.
Energetic and self-motivated individual able to work in a fast-paced team environment.
Self-directed and creative, and must able to work effectively in a flexible and agile multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary team environment.
Experience in mentoring and training junior personnel, and guiding their contributions towards high quality products.
Strong communication and presentation skills; able to work effectively as part of a team. Ability to negotiate effectively and rapidly resolve inter-personal conflicts.
Excellent analytical, organizational and multi-tasking skills.
A leader in the development of safety related tools, and maintenance of a safe and sustainable work environment.
