Job Description
The Sr. Network Engineering Manager is a key member of Silver Spring Networks Smart Grid Services and Operation with responsibility for leading an engineering team focused on building and operating one of the largest IPv6 networks in the world connecting millions of homes and businesses with their utility providers.
We are looking for a passionate, energetic leader who thrives in front of customers, has keen acumen for in-the-trenches team leadership, and can develop and evangelize a vision for the continued evolution of the Silver Spring network infrastructure.
The Sr. Network Engineering Manager:
Provides management oversight to a team of network engineers in order to achieve all objectives and the execution of assigned roles and responsibilities. Manages personnel activities of staff (hire, train, performance evaluation, compensation, termination)
Manages the planning, design, implementation, and ongoing support of data center, campus and wide area networking technologies. In addition to customer-facing service operations, the Network Engineering team is responsible for management of the Silver Spring Networks corporate network infrastructure, including LAN, Internet and wireless networking.
Establishes appropriate processes and interfaces to internal and external organizations in order to attain maximum operating efficiency within the team. Frequently interacts with customers in pre-sales and project implementation engagements and instills customer confidence in Silver Spring Networks capabilities and professionalism.
Determines workload, assigns priorities, tracks progress, and ensures completion of projects. Ensures assigned work is within scope of responsibilities and complies with best business practices. Develops and tracks appropriate metrics for determining organizational effectiveness.
Maintains technical knowledge and stays abreast of technical advancements in networking technology. Analyzes emerging technologies for potential leverage in providing new service offerings, increased staff efficiency, or reduced operating cost. Collaborates with Product Management, Software Engineering, Hardware Engineering and Manufacturing teams in the design and development of new product offerings.
Provides recommendations to the capital and operating budget process and ensures expenditures are in line with established budgets.
Works in close collaboration with the Silver Spring InfoSec, Systems Engineering, Database Operations teams to define, implement and ensure proper network security controls are in place. Participates in customer and corporate compliance audits. Participates in Critical Situation and Security Incident Response teams.
Ensures compliance with all contractual commitments.
Required Skills
Excellent blend of managerial, technical and customer-facing skills. Ability to articulate advanced technical concepts to a technical and semi- or non-technical audience.
Advanced knowledge of networking and security technologies, particularly Cisco Networking. Ability to estimate task and project level of effort and validate LOE estimates given by team members and provide input to priority setting decisions.
Oversight of project planning with the ability to convey plans and deliverables to internal company stakeholders and external customers.
General knowledge of Unix, database, storage and security technologies and their dependence on networking.
Minimum of 9 years of experience in network engineering and management
Minimum 5 years of staff management experience
Bachelor?s degree in Computer Science or related technical area of study, or additional 4 years of relevant experience
Certification in Cisco networking (i.e., CCIE) and/or security (i.e., CISSP) highly desired
Ability to work under pressure
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Position requires ability to travel up to 5%
