Gevo, Inc. is an exciting, team-oriented company that is pioneering the advanced green energy industry. We are looking for a Senior Process Engineer, based in Englewood, Colorado. The Senior Process Engineer will be responsible for leading the commercial design and start-up of economical and robust biological and chemical processes to produce fermentation based biofuels. Technology areas include feed-stock processing, fermentation, recovery and purification. The Senior Process Engineer will create process flow diagrams, process material and energy balances, process capital and operating cost studies to understand commercial feasibility and plant design. This position will also design, install and operate pilot plant and commercial facilities to support technology demonstration and product samples. They will work with QP and Fermentation groups to complete transfer of microorganism from laboratory to pilot plant scale production. This position will identify critical process areas and optimize process results.
Requirements include:
? M.S. or PhD in Chemical Engineering or Biochemical Engineering or related field, or equivalent education and experience;
? Requires a minimum of 10 years of increasingly responsible professional, not academic, experience solving industrial problems;
? Strong knowledge of unit operation functionality including the strengths and weaknesses of various unit operations and their limitations;
? Experience in collecting and analyzing data for laboratory and pilot operations to provide direction for optimal process development;
? Experience in developing mass and energy balances using an array of analytical techniques and calculation methods;
? Ability to troubleshoot process unit operations based on experience and broad overall background in chemical and engineering sciences (e.g. biology, chemistry, analytical chemistry, and process engineering);
? Preparing and delivering information in a concise and professionally written format;
? Preparing and presenting information to staff in formal and informal settings;
? Ability to work in teams;
? Directing and coordinating work among teams and groups;
? Developing and/or creating new or more effective ideas, approaches, etc;
? Developing and/or creating methods, procedures, training, etc;
? Developing and formulating short-range plans and decisions;
? Analyzing and developing solutions to problems;
? Managing various projects, work and providing technical support;

Responsibilities include:
? Responsible for commercial process design and start-up of biofuels production facilities;
? Integrate safety into process design and work practices;
? Design and start-up of industrial scale fermentation and distillation systems;
? Create and review block flow diagrams, process flow diagrams and process and instrumentation diagrams;
? Complete engineering calculations, mass and energy blanaces and process equipment design;
? Convert technical information from laboratory and pilot research information to commercial process systems;
? Create and review equipment and materials specification data sheets;
? Create and review user requirements for equipment and processes;
? Participate in process qualification, start-up and troubleshooting to achieve plant performance targets;
? Interpersonal effectiveness and teamwork: Interacts well in a team environment (clients, peers, vendors and contractors), good communication at all levels in the organization: open and flexible to changes in priorities and timelines, good listening skills;
? Work with peers and management to support engineering scale-up efforts. Identify outside technology vendors, evaluate equipment performance, conduct process trials, and make recommendations to management concerning technical feasibility;
? Contribute to focused and productive engineering as a member of an interdisciplinary development team including engineers, chemists, technicians, microbiologists, and biochemists;
? Participate with legal counsel to protect and enrich the intellectual property portfolio of the Project. Identify through careful, thoughtful and thorough research, ways to increase value to the portfolio;
? Independently apply a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products and problems. Maintain a broad knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories. Serve as in-house and outside representative;
? Travel is required for a portion of job duties.
