Our therapy is based on pancreatic beta cell progenitors derived from human pluripotent stem cells. These cells are implanted using a durable and retrievable encapsulation device. Once implanted and matured, these cells secrete insulin in response to blood glucose levels. Our goal is long term insulin independence without immune suppression, and without hypoglycemia and other diabetes-related complications.
Position Description: The Senior Research Associate will provide support in our histology core facility for the purpose of assessing tissue and medical device histopathology. Primary duties will include processing samples for frozen and paraffin sectioning, performing H&E staining, analyzing samples using confocal or brightfield microscopy and producing digital images. In consultation with the department manager, other duties will include performing histological assessments of tissue morphology and graft-host responses, and immunohistochemistry staining. For each histological assessment, a presentation or report will be generated, including the experiment?s background or hypothesis, images, and summary of findings. Additional responsibilities include maintaining a centralized tracking system for samples received from the in vivo and in vitro groups, performing routine equipment maintenance, and keeping an inventory of supplies and reagents for use in the histology core facility.

Requirements: This position requires a bachelor?s degree in biology or a related field and a minimum of five years of histology experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the job duties may be accepted.
Hands-on experience performing the duties listed above is required (processing, sectioning, H&E staining, IHC, and microscopy). Experience with high throughput digital scanning, autostaining, and analytical software is preferred. Experience working in a GLP/GMP compliant environment is also preferred. A general understanding of cell biology, developmental biology, or molecular biology is helpful. Candidates must be skilled in Windows and Microsoft Office. Strong verbal and written communication skills are required.
