The Senior System Administrator position is responsible for effective provisioning, installation/configuration, operation, and maintenance of systems? hardware and software and related infrastructure. This individual participates in technical research and development towards platform stability and progress. This individual ensures that system hardware, operating systems, software systems, and related procedures adhere to organizational standards, enabling coworkers and clients.
This individual is accountable for the following systems: virtualized Linux and software systems that support infrastructure. Responsibilities on these systems include provisioning, operations and support, and maintenance to ensure continual innovation.
Provisioning
Engineering of System Administration-related solutions for various project and operational needs.
Install new / rebuild existing servers and configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, etc. in accordance with standards and project/operational requirements.
Contribute to, document, and maintain system standards.
Research and recommend innovative, and where possible automated approaches for system administration tasks. Identify approaches that leverage our resources and provide economies of scale.
Operations and Support
Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups.
Perform security monitoring to identify any possible intrusions.
Perform regular file archival and purge as necessary.
Create, change, and delete user accounts per request.
Provide Tier Il/other support per request from various constituencies. Investigate and troubleshoot issues.
Repair and recover from hardware or software failures. Coordinate and communicate with impacted constituencies.
Maintenance
Apply OS patches and upgrades on a regular basis, and upgrade administrative tools and utilities and environments.
Upgrade and configure system software that supports infrastructure or applications per project or operational needs.
Maintain operational documentation on configuration or procedures.
Perform periodic performance reporting to support capacity planning.
Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required.
Configure CPU, memory, and disk partitions as required.
The best candidate will excel in the following areas (our current solution is in parenthesis)
Linux (any distro, but we run mostly Ubuntu, and also CentOS / Oracle Linux)
Virtualization (Xen)
Webserver application and Java Application stacks (Apache/Tomcat)
Scripting - with powerful grepping skills
Additional familiarity with the following will be a definite plus
Storage Administration (Nexenta); Configuration management (puppet); Version Control Systems (svn, git); Monitoring and Log Analysis (Zenoss, Splunk, Cacti); Distributed Computing / Infrastructure as a Service (SoftLayer); CDN (Akamai); Load Balancing and Global Traffic Management (haproxy, Big/lP); Firewalls (iptableslCheckpoint); Message Bus Technology (ActiveMQ); SMTP (Postfix, Sendmail); Database technologies, SQL and NoSQL (Oracle 11g RAC, MySQL, MongoDB); Networking (Cisco); Knowledge of operation and/or administration of Atlassian tool suite, Content Management System (CoreMedia).
Complexity/PROBLEM SOLVING:
Position deals with a variety of problems and sometime has to decide which (possibly non-perfect) answer is best.
Decisions normally have a noticeable effect department-wide and possibly company-wide, and judgment errors can require emergency backtracking.
RESPONSIBILITY/OVERSlGHT -FINANCIAL & SUPERVISORY:
Functions as a worker doing the work similar to those in the work unit; responsibility for conceptualizing and implementing paradigm-changing solutions, cross-training, documentation, and setting the work pace.
No budget responsibility.
COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:
Must be a strong team player; both willing to project-lead team members as well as facilitate the success of other teams' efforts.
Interpret and/or discuss information with others inside and out our department, which involves terminology or concepts not familiar to many people; regularly provide advice and recommend actions involving rather complex issues. Resolve problems within established practices.
WORKING CONDlTlONS/PHYSlCAL EFFORT:
Responsibilities sometimes require working evenings and weekends, sometimes with little advanced notice.
Comfortable working in a fast-paced, rapidly-adaptive work environment
Requires participation in a scheduled on-call rotation.
No regular travel required.
Casual clothing / culture the norm in almost all situations.
Infrequently-needed ability to lift 50 pounds to shoulder height.
