About the Job:
Twilio is growing exponentially and we are looking for someone to build and standardize our platform systems across multi-regions/ datacenters.
We are looking for a systems engineer who is interested in building the next generation of platform systems to support global distribution, you know how to be a Systems Administrator but would prefer that all activities were automated. Think of it as akin to being the first person to define the platform systems for Amazon Web Services.
You will receive exposure to the unique set of challenges that come from scaling a global service that has to run at 100% availability.
Automation is key to almost everything we do at Twilio. We are looking for a leading "automation" mind - someone everyone wants to talk to about how we can do better.
Responsibilities:
Work within the Platform team and with the entire Product Development team to identify and triage production performance issues.
Identify and work to automated the platform layer of our system so that it can be consumed by the Product Development teams.
Twilio provides hosted carrier-class phone and messaging services and our customer have strict availability requirements that necessitate multi-availablity-zone and multi-region failover and resiliency. You will help develop and deploy solutions to support these requirements.
Take personal responsibility for the quality, reliability and availability of our platform systems. Finger-pointing is not in your repertoire, you believe and live DevOps.
Requirements:
You are proficient in Linux systems administration and understand all layers of Linux.
You currently manage production systems with 100s of servers.
You understand OS-level virtualization well. You have setup and managed virtualized production environments.
You know what is involved in deploying and managing databases (MySQL), JVM's, ZooKeeper, etc.
You are familiar with Chef or Puppet.
You are shell scripting (bash) guru and know at least one more language such as python or ruby.
You have some familiarity with AWS and/or other cloud environments.
You understand the details of network protocols and network architectures best suited for Web Services.
You understand the basic network principles of the internet, DNS, HTTP, SSL, etc.
You have a solid software engineering background.
You don't just learn how things work, you learn why. Understanding how computers work at a fundamental level is a passion of yours.
You know agile software development processes and can thrive in an agile environment.
You focus on continuous improvement and can describe the approaches you have taken.

Bonus Points:
Bachelors (preferably Masters) degree in Computer Science or Computer Information Systems, or equivalent experience.
