The Senior Systems Administrator plans, coordinates, manages, and troubleshoots the Chef computer system infrastructure; provides technical advice to Development and non-technical teams; designs and architects solutions and also mentors and trains any junior system administrators. Chef follows DevOps, and this role will work closely with Developers to perform all functions and responsibilities in making the production environment stable and scalable. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated and self-driven, capable of working with little instruction to resolve demanding tasks working with internal teams.
Works effectively in a team/Agile environment to monitor, log, resolve, and escalate any issues with Chef?s development, test, or multi-tenant SaaS production environments/servers.
Follow the established operations procedures to ensure timely resolution or escalation of operations issues. The Senior SysAdmin distinguishes himself or herself from a non-senior position by displaying technical leadership, undying initiative and a desire to continually grow and improve the infrastructure.
Chef?s strong DevOps approach requires this role to interact with Development and other departments in order to resolve complex projects and problem resolution. Chef is an open environment where helping each other is a standard and an expectation.
Will be required to lead high visibility/value projects with a high degree of autonomy.
Prioritize projects and daily planned work to achieve the highest degree of success while managing competing demands through Kanban.
Continually look for opportunities to develop solutions through automation; participates in teams dedicated to continuous improvement/integration/deployment.
Assists in the selection of candidates when operations knowledge is required, either by reviewing resumes, or by screening and/or interviewing candidates.
Mentors less experienced System Administrators and fosters a learning and growth environment.

Job Knowledge, Qualifications and Experience ?
Experience managing syslog tools such as Splunk, syslogd?
Expert in running Linux based HA environments
Experience with configuring load balancers, network routing, firewalls and network services
Expert level knowledge of enterprise server-class hardware
Experience with scalable multitenant SaaS systems architecture,design management and monitoring
Highly proficient with industry monitoring tools (rrd, nagios, munin?)
Excellent problem solving skills and a desire to exercise and grow these skills on a daily basis
Integrate code/requests/input from engineering into the production and pre-production environments
Interact with various internal teams and address documentation and workflow needs
Maintain the production and non-production environments which makes continuous improvements to reliability, serviceability, and availability
Provide 24x7 support for all production environments as a third tier expert escalation point
Manage a queue of support tickets and troubleshoot complex problems as they arise
Highly proficient at supporting network based applications: IP, TCP, HTTP, DNS, FTP, and SMTP
Highly proficient at self-directing and self-initiating work
Demonstrated ability to own the engineering, design, and deployment decisions for a project, including solid, reliable and up-to-date documentation
Interfaces on daily basis with engineering team, support team and management
Expert Linux system administration skills ? self supporting for majority of OS issues and demonstrated knowledge in system tools
Able to write scripts in an administrative language (e.g Python, Perl, Bash, Ruby?) with in-depth knowledge in at least one
Demonstrated ability to evaluate solutions and execute on proof of concepts
Demonstrated mastery of debugging mutli-tiered network based applications
General experience with MySQL and Postgres database and high availability
Ability to leverage and mentor others through technical leadership
An associate or bachelors degree in computer science, or equivalent experience.
Over seven (7) years experience in Linux/Unix based system administration.
Configuration Automation Experience.
Demonstrated progression of technical leadership.
Experience with Chef a big plus.
