Summary
The Senior Systems Engineer reports to the IT Manager and is a key contributor for building, supporting, maintaining, and optimizing the IT infrastructure, which includes the corporate network, server hardware, operating systems, and their components. As a member of the IT team, this individual will provide technical leadership to Helpdesk Staff.
Description
The Senior Systems Engineer manages the following platforms on a day-to-day basis. Certain aspects may be transferred to other members of the team and/or vendors based on procedures, training and availability.
WAN/LAN/WWAN: Cisco and Comcast Routers, SonicWall Firewalls, Dell Switches
VMWare vSphere, vCenter 4.x/5.x
Windows 2003/2008 Server Operating System
Server Roles such as DC/DNS/DHCP/FTP/WSUS/IIS/File-Print Servers
Exchange Messaging and Blackberry/BES Services
Dell Equallogic and EMC SAN Storage
Symantec Backup Exec 2010, TL2000 Tape Library and MD1200 DAT Array
Network Monitoring: design, maintenance, and initial response
Involves vendors where appropriate
Performs initial deployment and major changes for the following: Symantec Endpoint Gateway Anti-Virus, SysAid Helpdesk and WSUS Trains Helpdesk Staff to perform routine day-to-day tasks for these platforms
Helps design and implement solutions for Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery including tape backup and restores, and offsite replication to mirror site.
Develops Standard Operating Procedures to ensure standard processes are being followed and provide organizational efficiency.
Helps business operations groups utilize information systems to improve their efficiency.
Ensures computer equipment, hardware, and software are sufficient to meet organizational needs. Makes recommendations using best practices for complex systems.
Coordinates, directs and performs complex software installations and upgrades to operating systems and layered software packages.
Schedules installations and upgrades in accordance with IT policies and procedures.
Tests and operates firewalls, intrusion detection systems, enterprise anti-virus systems and software deployment tools.
Safeguards the network against unauthorized infiltration, modification, destruction or disclosure.
Conducts hardware and software audits of workstations and servers to ensure compliance with established standards, policies, and configuration guidelines.
Ensures workstation/server data integrity by evaluating, implementing, and managing appropriate software and hardware solutions of varying complexities.
Ensures data/media recoverability by developing and implementing a schedule of system backups and database archive operations.
Reviews and prioritizes network needs and present recommendations for network improvement.
Deploys patches throughout the network to ensure systems are up to date.
Develops, tests and implements new or modified configuration and document accordingly.
Supports a 24/7 operation onsite and remotely via mobile device after hours. Works with a minimal budget.
Qualifications
Administration and maintenance of Windows Server (2003/2008), Active Directory, Exchange (2010), SQL (2005/2008), VMware (ESX 4.x) , Sharepoint (2007/2010), Blackberry Enterprise Server (5.x), NAS/SAN Storage Servers, Cisco Switches and Routers, File and Print Servers.
Knowledge of Computer Software (Windows/Mac/Linux Operating Systems, Anti-Virus, Imaging, Database, etc.) and Computer Hardware (Servers, Desktops, Laptops, Routers, Blades, Printers, WAN/LAN/VPN etc.) required.
Experience with SysAid, Remedy or a similar trouble ticketing application is a plus.
Knowledge and proficiency with Microsoft Visio.
Bachelor?s Degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or equivalent experience and a minimum of six years of Network Systems Engineering.
At least one of these certifications: MCSE, CCEA, CISSP, MCITP or equivalent. ITIL, PMP Certifications Desired.
