JOB DESCRIPTION
Responsible for design, engineering and support of WhitePages 24 X 7 production and development systems environments.
Specify, design, and deploy complex systems and network solutions that support company products in a 24x7 environment
Design and implement open-source production monitoring systems. Train and mentor Operations and Development teams on the deployment, configuration and management of those systems
Design, implement and manage automation, build and configuration systems (such as Chef, Puppet, Rake, Cobbler) that replace manual tasks. Train and mentor Operations team on the management of those solutions
Work with the Architecture team to develop new automation to support continuous release and agile development and improve existing processes
Manage and improve virtualization infrastructure in a hybrid cloud environment on open source and 3rdparty platforms including Vsphere, Amazon Web Services, KVM and Openstack
Maintain and troubleshoot in-house and 3rdparty software. Work directly with vendors on the integration and configuration of 3rdparty software deployed into WhitePages production environments
Act as a liaison and subject matter expert between product development and production operations to define changes in implementations that support ongoing software development
Contribute to the design, implementation and management of systems to ensure high availability and performance of a top 40 website
Deliver project milestones and tasks assigned by manager on schedule, communicating regularly on your progress
Support 24X7 production environment, including carrying an on call pager at scheduled intervals
Create and maintain high-quality documentation of all relevant specifications, systems, and procedures
Stay current on system and network security trends and make recommendations to correct deficiencies and improvements to management
Communicate effectively with management, co-workers and business partners
Mentor junior members of the team and provide direction and leadership within the operations group
Position requires that incumbent carry an on-call pager in rotation and respond to emergency situations appropriately and within department standards
May require weekend and evening work, outside of normal business operating hours, to meet project deadlines
QUALIFICATIONS
7+ years experience with responsibility for installation, maintenance, tuning, security, and high availability of Linux
7+ years experience administering UNIX systems and related protocols/software,
including DNS, NTP, NFS, SMTP, syslog, SSH, shell Ruby on Rails and Perl
7+ years experience supporting 24X7, high availability internet application environments that include web, application and database servers, load balancing systems and clustered, shared storage solutions
Strong programming experience in Ruby, Perl or Java
Demonstrated experience designing, deploying and managing common open source automation systems such as Puppet, Chef and CFEngine
Proven success at designing and managing monitoring solutions with open source products such as Nagios, Zenoss, or Zabbix
Familiarity with agile software development lifecycle, Open Source code repositories such as Git, development tools (Bugzilla) and managed workflow
Strong systems administration experience with database driven web application environments. Familiarity with open-source database systems such as PostgreSQL and MYSQL
Strong command of Linux kernel 2.6+ features including compiling, troubleshooting, memory management, tuning, I/O subsystem, hardware and software RAID, and security
Experience implementing and maintaining high capacity networks with an emphasis on performance and security
Experience with Juniper and Cisco networking preferred
Experience with Hadoop preferred
Proven ability to effectively present technical information to both engineering and non-technical business team audiences
Ability to lead and mentor junior members of the Operations team
4 year degree or equivalent experience
