This position will support Stemgent, Inc. The Service Scientist is an individual possessing the ability to make and expand high-quality mRNA iPS cells and excellent organizational and communication abilities to ensure timely delivery on concurrent service projects. The Service Scientist will directly interact with clients in the planning stage of service projects and then work within a team of scientists to execute them. The Service Scientist will also interact with R&D and Production Scientists to contribute to the development of new products and new applications related to Reprogramming and Cellular Differentiation. The researcher will help to design and execute experiments at the forefront of pluripotent stem cell biology and cell fate manipulation. The position requires hands-on cell culture and bench work. Weekend coverage is required, but with flexible hours. The position is located in Cambridge, MA.
POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES:
Assist with the development of new reprogramming and directed differentiation services including:
Reprogramming of somatic cells into iPS cells
Directed dfferentiation of pluripotent stem cells into different cell lineages
Trans-differentiation of somatic cell types into other tissue types
Expansion of human ES and iPS cells under feeder and feeder-free culture conditions
Genetic manipulation of iPS cells using multiple methods
Characterization of undifferentiated in vitro-derived differentiated cell types using standard methods such as flow cytometry, real-time PCR, immunostaining, phase/fluorescence microscopy and relevant functional assays where applicable
Maintain detailed, accurate and up-to-date records, including materials and labor used in each phase of a project
Maintain service equipment, inventories of reagents and cells, and order supplies
Follow technical documents including standard operating procedures, testing protocols, project reports, and scientific presentations
Timely preparation of job cost and client milestone reports
Communicate effectively with the Service Director and fellow service scientists, with clients on service projects and with colleagues at scientific meetings, through manuscripts and posters presentations
Support other areas and colleagues in R&D that focus on reprogramming, stem cell culture, and reprogramming services
Support colleagues in other departments such as Manufacturing, Quality Control, Marketing and Reprogramming Training
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND/OR EDUCATION REQUIRED:
Comprehensive experience in the life science industry:
Biology, cell and molecular biology, developmental biology or bioengineering
with a minimum of 2 years experience in stem cell biology
Experience with reprogramming required-1 year of generating iPS cells by multiple methods, including mRNA reprogramming
Hands-on experience with culturing human ES and iPS cells in both feeder and feeder-free environments
Expertise in testing and developing protocols for reprogramming and directed differentiation of human ES or iPS cells towards ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm lineages
Expertise in characterizing pluripotent stem cells and their differentiated progeny using flow cytometry, immunofluorescence, real-time PCR and basic molecular and biochemical techniques
Experience in gene targeting of mouse or human ES or iPS cells beneficial
Ability to design and execute experiments, analyze results, formulate conclusions, troubleshoot experiments, re-formulate and refine additional experiments
Excellent organizational skills including the ability to prioritize and multi-task
Proficiency in generating and delivering presentations and project reports
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
Solid computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Photoshop
Outstanding work ethic, highly motivated, and willing to work as part of matrix teams
Strong desire to develop novel products and services for the stem cell market
Enjoy and have the patience and care required for pluripotent cell culture
Take initiative and responsibility for the integrity and completion of projects
Design experiments with a clear rationale and appropriate controls; anticipate possible outcomes; analyze results to support solid conclusions and trouble-shoot
