Job Description
At Synthetic Genomics, Inc., we are dedicated to developing and commercializing genomic-driven solutions to address global challenges. We are currently seeking a Software Engineer to join our Synthetic Genomics Sciences team in a fast-growing, dynamic and collaborative team in La Jolla, CA.
This position is an opportunity to develop highly advanced research systems for assembly and metabolic characterization through bioinformatics routes. The design is on the cutting edge of technology in multiple disciplines, this software will help orchestrate the interaction between technology and biology.
The software engineer will focus on design and automation of our server side systems and pipelines. The successful candidate will develop and extend the existing data analysis software to manage large quantities of data in an automated fashion. The software framework is used for identifying, annotating, and analyzing genes and metabolic pathways in DNA sequences. The framework provides capacity for processing and analyzing large volumes of biological sequence data using large-scale high performance computing systems.
Required Skills
Self-starter: comfortable and effective with little supervision and possess independent thought processes while still engaged within a team environment.
Apply appropriate standards, processes, procedures and tools through the development cycle.
Develop, test and debug software used as a solution to scientific development
Drive/initiative and a strong interest in complex software engineering problems
Exposure working with relational databases (MySQL)
Execute software implementations based on documentation and specification
Identify and communicate potential scalability issues would be a plus
Comfortable working as part of a team as well as independently
Must possess excellent communication skills
Required Experience
Bachelor?s Degree in Computer Science/Engineering or equivalent experience
0-4 years of software experience of software engineering in Python, C/C++, Java, Perl, or equivalent in a Linux environment
Strong understanding of OOP and software architecture
Preferred but not required:
Experience working in cloud computing (especially Amazon)
Experience working in biotech or scientific research
