We're looking for an innovative software engineer to architect, design, develop, test, and advance sophisticated data and workflow integration between Splunk¹s machine data search and indexing technology, and the Hadoop ecosystem of technologies. You should thrive on the rapid pace of innovation in the big data arena, and the ability to seek integration opportunities that provide an order of magnitude of value in the form of faster development, increased flexibility to change, higher-throughput of data processing, increased reliability, richer exploration, and analysis/utilization of data insights.
Responsibilities: I want to and can do that!- BLeverage extensive theoretical and practical expertise to transform research from interesting ideas into high-value solutions
- Be a key contributor to the Hadoop and data clustering initiatives at Splunk
- Includes architecture, design, analysis of strengths/weaknesses of competing approache
- Includes development/implementation of features, especially around optimization and performance for distributed system
- Principle lead on Performance, Scalability, and Reliability aspects of Splunk/Hadoop solution
- Principle lead for advanced monitoring/analysis solutions for Hadoop
- Research on technology opportunities for Splunk/Hadoop and other big data solutions
- Develop demos, and presentations of applying Splunk and Hadoop to a variety of ³big data² use cases, including advanced analytics
Requirements: I've already done that or have that!- 2+ years of industry experience
- Expertise of advanced analytical techniques such as: machine learning, markov models, beysian classification, k-means clustering, etc.
- Ability to bridge the gap between theory and application, and speak to both perspectives
- Significant research experience in the area of Big Data and Hadoop, especially concerning distributed computing optimizations
- Strong enterprise Java (or other OOP language) knowledge, and track record of delivering innovative solutions to tough problems
- Thrives on big data challenges of large volumes, at high velocity, with extreme variability
- Competency with a variety of traditional data technologies including RDBMS, ETL, Data Warehousing, BI, OLAP, OLTP
- Experience with new generation technologies, such as Hadoop, HBase, Hive, Cassandra, MongoDB, etc.
- Experience with a range of scripting technologies, including python, ruby, etc
- Experience with deployment, operations, and management issues for complex distributed data systems
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
- Dedication to testing as an essential part of software engineering practice
- Passionate about open source, including the ability to identify opportunities for Splunk in the ecosystem
Education: Got it!- Masters in Computer Science or equivalent experience, PhD preferred
