Software Engineer: Marketplace Operations Etsy
THIS JOB HAS EXPIRED
We have openings for both new and experienced software engineers to join our Marketplace Operations Engineering team. Etsy is an exciting, complex, quickly growing marketplace. To help it continue to grow and thrive, you will be developing web applications that support the Etsy staff and their interaction with buyers and sellers. This role has a huge impact on the Etsy community, and directly helps your coworkers who will use your creations every day.
About the Engineering Team
The technical staff at Etsy believes that code is craft, good software and systems designs are works of art, and that the work we do is part of larger creative culture represented by the hundreds of thousands of inspired makers who make Etsy such a wondrous marketplace. We believe that small, empowered, self-motivated teams can do big things. We also believe in the right tool for the job, not language-as-religion. Our current systems run PHP, Java, Python, Ruby, Solr/Lucene, Postgres, MySQL, and more. Check out our Engineering blog: http://codeascraft.etsy.com/
About the Position
To keep Etsy a fun and thriving marketplace, we're constantly reviewing all of the shops and communications on the site, keeping in close contact with all the members of the community. You will be building tools to make this process effective and scalable. This means helping a handful of Etsy employees support millions of Etsy users, and in some cases helping millions of Etsy users help themselves. We develop all our tools internally, and rarely rely on third-party software. We use the same codebase and deployment path as the live site, so our internal tools are highly integrated, allowing us to accomplish huge productivity gains. In most cases you will be creating specialized tools for specific tasks, boosting productivity in a specific area. In some cases you will be building an entirely new path of communication between Etsy and its members. As the other teams develop new features, we need new tools, so we've constantly got new and interesting apps to develop. This is a rewarding position since your customers sit in the same room with you, and you'll see results the second you deploy code. Also, since these apps are used internally, we have control over the environment and you will not need to be concerned with IE, or old versions of Chrome/Firefox/Safari. This position is a webapp hacker's dream: Take an idea, code, deploy, profit, repeat.
About You
To be a great fit for this role, you have:
? 3+ years of software development experience
? Strong familiarity with using -nix as a development platform.
? HTML/Javascript experience
? Understanding of good software development practices/patterns/
architecture
? Experience developing for the web. Ideally using Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP
? Strong experience with databases
? B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science or related technical field, or equivalent experience
Etsy develops applications using PHP, and tests in Ruby, but a demonstrated ability to learn new languages is equally acceptable.
