Software Engineer: Performance Etsy
THIS JOB HAS EXPIRED About the Job
What will you do as a member of the Performance team at Etsy? Read these site performance reports on our engineering blog (http://codeascraft.etsy.com/category/performance/) and the news blog (http://www.etsy.com/blog/news/2013/etsy-gets-faster/). Make those numbers drop. Tell as many people as possible how you did it - email the team, write a post. Make those numbers drop again. Find other numbers to target - mobile web performance (a quarter of our traffic), native app performance, API performance, international performance - write about those. Make the new numbers drop.
Investigation is key - we gather tons of data from logs, StatsD, analytics - we have months of xhprof samples sitting in HDFS just waiting for someone to analyze them. Sometimes you will do the optimizations yourself, sometimes you'll need to create a new dashboard or a new tool or run a hack week to get the rest of the team engaged. Work with Design on CSS and sprites; with Ops and Core Platform to optimize our use of MySQL, PostgreSQL, Memcached and Redis; with DevTools on asset packaging and template precompilation.
Can you justify porting a hot code path in PHP to a C extension? Rasmus might help you implement it. Work closely with teams addicted to shipping features - convince them to prioritize performance. You will become familiar with every inch of Etsy's code and infrastructure.

2. Make it drop.

Etsy is the marketplace we make together. We have 20 million members in over 200 countries. In 2012, our sellers grossed more than $850 million in sales. Our mission is to reimagine commerce to build a more fulfilling and lasting world.
Our offices are like this http://www.avc.com/avc/2010/09/the-office-matters.html and this http://www.officesnapshots.com/2010/10/11/etsy-offices/. We're empowered and expected to be ourselves, share our ideas and figure out what we can each do to keep Etsy evolving. We have full company-paid benefits, including family and domestic partner benefits, humane working hours, couches, quiet spaces, lunch twice a week and handmade desks.
We're growing rapidly and are well-funded with a proven business model and established revenue to help us continue serving our community.
If you're interested in joining the team at Etsy, please send a cover letter along with your resume telling us what inspires you about Etsy and why you think you are perfect for the team. If you contribute to an open source project, write a blog, or practice another craft besides coding, that means something to us, and we would love to hear about it when you write!
