Sr Network Engineer Layered Technologies

Successful individuals in this role will be network engineers with a strong background in Layer 2 and Layer 3 technologies, who work well and communicate effectively with others, are self-starting, creative, and able to think through a project from start to finish. Engineers will be required to take ownership of the LT backbone networks and associated networks, including concept, architecture, deployment, and documentation. Design and deployment of open-source network support tools will be a major focus. Network engineers at LT have a great deal of autonomy, and are expected to be able to manage their time effectively. This position requires an individual who is able to work successfully in a virtual environment, and who requires little direct supervision. Candidates should be able to work with a remote team, and to take constructive feedback and input from other engineers. Some travel may be required.
Job Description
Primarily responsible for overall assurance of networking health throughout all LT network segments, both internal and external
Organizes and implements continuous networking enhancements, including disaster recovery and capacity planning
Leads design, development and deployment of new technologies, services and underlying network infrastructure. Architects complex networks and multi-server systems. Works with other engineering/development teams to create robust scalable solutions
Researches and evaluates new network technologies and products, and defines recommendations and specifications for Global Hosting production implementation.
As the highest point of escalation, handles Tier-III support requests for complex technical problems and high-severity outages from other network engineers and business departments. Performs highly complex network engineering support and advanced troubleshooting of most critical problems. Works with network equipment and software vendors to resolve defects and other technical issues.
Develops service specifications, internal standards, and policies and procedures to adapt to evolving technology and business needs. Participates in development of technical training and documentation for network operations and support staff.
In-depth knowledge and extensive hands-on experience with a full range of layer 1-7 technologies and protocols. These may include advanced layer2; redundancy protocols, advanced OSPF, BGP, and other routing protocols, advanced layer4-7 load-balancing, firewalls and security, context and content management, and other technologies.
Advanced knowledge and extensive hands-on experience in Cisco routing and switching equipment and technologies (hardware/software, full/advanced configuration, advanced troubleshooting)
Advanced hands-on experience with networking equipment and technologies of other vendors (Juniper, Nortel, Cisco, F5, Foundry, Nokia, Checkpoint, and/or other).
Develops extensive test cases and participates in testing and certification of new network hardware and software products and solutions.
Performs physical and logical network design, advanced configuration and maintenance of routers, switches, switch-routers, load-balancers, content-delivery devices, firewall/security devices, and other types of networking equipment.
Plans, coordinates and executes major/large-scale network operations, such as: critical maintenance, large-scale migrations, adjustments on the edge with backbone, global technology changes/additions, major hardware/software upgrades.
Work seamlessly in a team atmosphere
Participation in administrative on-call rotation and ability to be on-call 24x7x365 for networking and customer connectivity emergencies, which may include on-site activities outside of normal business hours

Spanning-Tree, including 802.1d and 802.1w
Trunking (Ether-channel)
802.1q vlan tagging
Strong troubleshooting skills and effective troubleshooting methods
MPLS Experience a plus
Layer 3 Experience
OSPF Routing including route redistribution
BGP
Multi-homing
Load balancing traffic and engineering for automatic failover
Multiple methods for equal-cost load balancing
Routing policy to manipulate BGP attributes to hit 95% billing
Isolation of routing policies between multiple datacenters including community attribute schemes
Route reflectors
Flow analysis experience a plus
Architecture and Design
Routing policy for auto-failover, transit policy segregation, and 95% billing minimized
National Backbone architecture or design
Understanding of peering policies vs. transit policies
Understanding the current state of the Internet?s network major players and quality between vendors
Visio design/diagramming skills

Education / Experience
5 or more years of direct industry experience
5 or more years of experience in a customer service environment
Preferred certifications: CCNP, CCDP, CCIE, CCDE
Preferred education: BS in Computer Science, IT or similar and/or related experience
Expert working knowledge of networking, security and firewall implementations.
Proficient in MS Office
Strong working knowledge of Linux and Windows operating systems
Extensive working experience with open-source software and tools, including scripting/automation of repeated tasks, extremely comfortable in a command-line environment
Strong project management skills, prioritization of projects, and time management skills
Communicate effectively with business units across the company
Communicate effectively both written and verbally
