Sr. R&D Engineer/R&D Engineer Gen9
At Gen9, we are transforming Synthetic Biology through our high-volume, automated next generation synthesis of DNA constructs and libraries. As researchers? understanding of gene sequence data increases, their ability to design and improve genes, pathways and organisms using synthetic biology techniques will also increase. Gen9 has produced the first ?fab? for synthetic biology ? the BioFab platform, which was chosen by ?The Scientist? as the #1 innovation of 2012. The Gen9 BioFab platform was conceived, designed and implemented to fill the gene synthesis void.
We are seeking an exceptional and highly motivated R&D engineer to join Gen9?s R&D team in developing the future platform, pushing the limits of our disruptive DNA technology to even greater heights. The R&D engineer will design and build new instruments, and develop control and analytical software to drive mechatronics and optical systems as well as microfluidic devices. You will have the opportunity to develop these instruments from the research stage through to deployment. Reporting directly to the Director of R&D, the successful candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary team of engineers, chemists, and biologists.
The successful candidate will:
?Work collaboratively with biologists, chemists, and engineers to invent, build, and demonstrate new means of micro- and molecular-biology manipulations
?Design, build, and test fluidics instrumentation using commercial and custom equipment
?Design microfluidic circuits, and work with external vendors on fabrication
?Outfit and deploy an internal prototyping lab from the ground up
?Design mechanical hardware for experimental apparatus, and work with external vendors on fabrication
?Write software scripts for laboratory data acquisition and control
?Select, or work with electrical engineers to design, electronic circuits for data acquisition and control
?Run chemistry and molecular biology experiments in commercial laboratory instrumentation and new prototypes
?Analyze data from sensors and imaging systems
?Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or equivalent field
?PhD with 5 years of industrial experience, MS with 10 years of industrial experience or BS with 15 years of industrial experience including experience manipulating micro liter volumes of fluid, MEMS and/or micro fluidics fabrication, and differential surface functionalization.
?Hands-on working knowledge of microfluidics and automated fluidics instrumentation
?Detailed understanding of laminar and liquid-liquid fluid flows
?Proficient with SolidWorks, LabView
?Proficient in programming in Python, MATLAB or C++
?Proficient in developing and executing experimental protocols
?Ability to thrive in a team setting with scientists, engineers, and research associates
?Ability to work independently
?Adaptive to a rapidly changing environment
?Excellent oral and written communication skills to communicate findings clearly and concisely.
Desired Skills & Experience
?Detailed knowledge of optical techniques, fluorescent detection, and low Reynolds number fluid dynamics
?Hands-on working knowledge of basic molecular biology techniques (e.g., PCR, ligation, nucleic acid extraction, electrophoresis)
?Proficient with COMSOL
?Experience in life sciences industry
?Commercialization experience in microfluidics
