Job Description
At Synthetic Genomics, Inc., we are dedicated to developing and commercializing genomic-driven solutions to address global challenges. We are currently seeking a Senior Research Associate to join our fast-growing, dynamic and collaborative team in Calipatria, CA.
This Senior Research Associate will help manage research and production for open ponds and photobioreactors.
Required Skills
The Sr. Research Associate will lead the evaluations of microalgae, culture conditions and cultivation/production systems under the direction of a SGI scientist that result in maximizing productivity in open and closed photo bio-reactors.
SRA will be responsible for the day to day supervision and direction of bio-technician?s operating the open and closed photo bio-reactors.
Collaborate with scientists to develop, implement, and operate culture systems at various scales.
Perform routine and experimental physiological and biochemical measurements.
Ensure the timely and accurate recording of data into the Laboratory Information Management system (LIMS).
Support the update and modification of existing SGI SOP?s for culturing and analytical testing.
Document experimental results in a well-kept notebook and reports.
Evaluate results and present results in internal meetings.
Design and conduct complex laboratory experiments, generate reproducible and reliable results.
Present and convey complex problems or issues across functional areas.
Provide a recognized companywide technical or analytical resource with responsibility for determining methods and approaches.
Under general direction of Scientist, has overall project responsibility for a research program of limited scope, including experimental design and communicating with other team members.
Responsible for the maintenance and improvement of an area of technical expertise or methodology.
Interacts with other Research Staff in other research departments to accomplish project goals.
Present or report results of independent scientific research with peers at internal scientific meetings. May present or report at external meetings.
Required Experience
BS degree in Phycology, Microbiology, Biology or related discipline.
Ability to work overtime and weekends.
The Calipatria operations will be a 7 day/week operation. Must be able to support phone calls to support on-going experimentation.
Background in microalgal physiology is desired.
Experience culturing at a variety of scales (test-tubes through 10s or 100s of liters), indoors and outdoors.
Practical experience at optimization of experimental systems.
Prefer experience with optimization of production systems.
Prefer experience with photosynthetic microbes.
Advanced scientific/ technical reading and writing skills.
Advanced scientific analytical skills.
Advanced laboratory work skills.
Strong communication skills (written and oral) Problem solving skills requiring the application of scientific theory.
Creative skills in the development of hypothesis and approaches.
