Sr. Scientist, Assay Development Second Genome
Reporting to: Director R&D/Sr. Staff Scientist
Location: Biotechnology Start-up company in the San Francisco Bay Area
General Description: A Venture Capital-funded, start-up biotechnology company seeks an energetic and creative individual with experience in the design and implementation of cell-based and biochemical assays to measure host-microbe functions related to pathogenic bacterial infections, and host-microbe interactions in inflammatory and metabolic diseases.
Background: The candidate will have a MS degree and 5 years experience or a Ph.D. degree (or equivalent) with 3 years of postdoctoral experience in Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Pharmacology or Microbiology. Biotech or pharma experience is desired but not a requisite.
Required attributes: The candidate will have experience in procuring and curating compound libraries, and have a sound understanding of compound and database management. The successful candidate will have a sound understanding of cell culture techniques and molecular cloning. Likewise the candidate will be facile with various readout systems, including gene reporter assays using luminometry, fluorescence and FRET, phenotypic readouts using immunocytochemistry and cell sorting, and cellular secretion function using ELISA, HTRF, and other immunoassay formats. Experience with immunofluorescence microscopy and radiochemical assays is desirable but not requisite. Familiarity with enzymatic assays and data analysis is also desirable but not a requisite.
A publication record encompassing molecular and cellular assay technologies is highly desired.

The candidate must show a desire to utilize his/her cell biology skills to discover drugs for several diseases known to be affected by host-microbiome interactions, such as inflammatory bowel diseases, infectious and metabolic disease.
The ability to work as a team member and a willingness to become part of a fast paced, entrepreneurial biotech atmosphere is a must. Candidate must portray an ability to collaborate with team members in the company?s drug discovery efforts.
Strong interpersonal skills and self-motivation are highly desirable and the candidate must have an understanding of the general needs of the business side of the organization.
Salary is commensurate with experience; stock options and annual bonus are part of a compensation package.
