Job Description we are dedicated to developing and commercializing genomic-driven solutions to address global challenges. We are currently seeking a Sr. Scientist, Microbial Physiology to join our fast-growing, dynamic and collaborative team in La Jolla, CA.

This Sr. Scientist provides technical leadership for conducting innovative research in microbial physiology, establishing and advancing project goals, and ensuring timely completion of project objectives.
The Sr. Scientist of Microbial Physiology will be responsible for the design and execution of experimental strategies for elucidating the catabolic and biosynthetic pathways of novel hydrocarbon-utilizing microbes leveraging modern genetic and biochemical approaches.
Develop understanding of the nutritional requirements for novel hydrocarbon-utilizing microbes and impact of environmental factors on their growth and product formation, along with insight into the genomic basis for observed physiological behavior.
Provide technical expertise in aerobic and anaerobic microbial physiology for advancing biocatalyst development.
Present data-supported conclusions in written and oral reports on progress and assist in the development of an intellectual property strategy, including the creation and submission of patent applications
Effectively conduct and manage experimental data analysis and interpretation, and make appropriate recommendations based on the results
Supervise and guide the professional development of direct reports
Comply with Synthetic Genomics company policies including observance of US and California laws and regulations.
Ensure that all company policies and safety practices are followed
Required Experience
Ph.D. in Microbiology or a related field with 5+ years of relevant post-doctoral and/or industrial experience.
Expertise in metabolic pathway elucidation of hydrocarbon-utilizing microbes under aerobic and diverse anaerobic conditions
Proven experience using genetic manipulation for physiological characterization
Additional experience in at least one of the following areas:
Bench scale reactor design and operation for physiological characterization
Modern molecular approaches to microbial ecology and metagenomics
Assay development and biochemical characterization of enzyme biocatalysts
Familiarity with analytical approaches required for microbial physiology studies.
Proven success leading and managing a small research team.
Excellent communication skills.
