We are seeking a technical communicator with a background in adult education to work with our Product Development and Engineering, Product Management, and Manufacturing teams to create instructional and informational materials for both internal and external audiences. The technical communicator will design and develop a variety of materials including end user documents, marketing materials, manufacturing procedures, software processes, and training materials that efficiently and effectively assist or educate users. The technical communicator will make recommendations on and deliver content in a range of formats like videos, audio files, wikis, documents, presentations, and interactive media following sound design and usability principles. The technical communicator may also be required to deliver training in a classroom or lab, on-the-job, or online setting.
The Senior Technical Communicator will also help define the processes, procedures, and tools for the department?s documentation functions including content and file management, control methods, change request workflows, and development tools.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Develop materials independently through all stages of the writing process including conducting needs analyses to determine the purpose, audience, and format; gathering information by interviewing, observing, and researching; synthesizing, organizing, and writing or developing content effectively; and validating the material for accuracy and comprehensiveness
Learn both technical and business processes for assigned applications, systems, and areas and translate learning and performance requirements into the material design
Develop content in a variety of media and show consistency in choosing the right tool for the communication challenge
Design templates for different materials following effective technical communication strategies
Write with a command of differing styles matched to the delivery format and purpose
Use established techniques for communicating with non-native audiences, structuring the content in a way that will be easier to localize when needed
Manage complex, ongoing projects including estimating the work, defining project plans, managing timelines and priorities, collaborating with business partners, and communicating project status
Evaluate and recommend tool sets and business processes (for example, for content management) to support the development and maintenance of technical materials
Design and conduct usability tests and evaluations to measure the effectiveness of materials
Train internal and external business partners, trainers, and end users in person or online
Lead meetings with stakeholders and business partners
Apply a broad knowledge of adult learning and technical communication principles to all work
Bachelor's degree in English, communication, technical communication or writing, journalism, or a related field
8+ years of experience in a technical communication role
6+ years of experience in a software development or manufacturing environment
Experience developing customer-facing collateral for international audiences
Experience with document/page design and usability
Intermediate to advanced skill using the following or similar applications: Captivate, Word, FrameMaker, Illustrator, PhotoShop, and wiki applications
Strong project management skills and the ability to lead project teams
Excellent writing, communication, and research skills
Ability to gather, synthesize, and organize large amounts of information
Ability to express complex ideas clearly and accurately
Must be able to provide a portfolio of work demonstrating the required skills and experience
Must be eligible to obtain a US security clearance
Master's degree in a writing-, communication-, or training-related discipline
Experience in a training and development organization
Familiarity with ISO, CMMI, or controlled documentation environments
Regularly required to sit for extended periods of time; frequently required to move about to access file cabinets and use office equipment such as PC, copier, fax, telephone, etc.; occasionally required to reach overhead, bend, and lift objects of up to 30 lbs.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and use of computer monitor screens a great deal of time.
Ability to reach within hands and arms length, climb or balance, and crouch.
Individual?s primary workstation is located in an office area with ability to frequently work in a manufacturing/lab environment.
The noise level in this environment is low/moderate.
