The Technical Writing function is a part of Avalaras Client Services organization, with a responsibility to produce and maintain a library of accurate and up-to-date Product documentation. In this multifaceted role, you may produce many types of documents including: administration and configuration guides, release notes, and online help systems intended for a range of technical audiences. This position will also provide you with the opportunity to impact internal processes and potentially lead new projects as we delve deeper into customer understanding and strive to provide the cleanest, easiest-to-use documentation available in the marketplace. The Technical Writer-Senior may oversee the work of other technical writers and provide input to the technical writing processes and tools.
Work with the Product Management team to identify documentation requirements and establish a schedule for applying regular updates to all documentation as new features are released.
Ability to extract technical information from software design documents
Interview subject matter experts
Test software directly in order to create concise user documentation for how-to manuals, and on-line documentation
Research, outline, and write technically accurate documentation that conforms to company writing style
Test documentation against software to verify accuracy
Perform desktop publishing, screen captures
Excellent writing, research, and time management skills
Oversee work of other technical writers Contribute to technical writing processes and standards for the team Proficient in MS Word
Experience and Skills:
5-7 years of experience developing end-user documentation for software products
Superior communication and interpersonal skills; ability to consult, collaborate, facilitate, and lead
Ability to work with a high degree of initiative and independence and to prioritize work
Understanding of accounting software, sales and use tax, and/or tax compliance is preferred.
Strong understanding of the software development life cycle (SDLC)
DMS, CMS, and knowledge management experience preferred
Experience with on-line documentation and on-line publication tools (Mindtouch, KM Principles) preferred
Knowledge of accounting systems, sales and use tax, and tax compliance preferred
Bachelor's degree in computer science, technical communications, or significant comparable professional experience; advanced degree preferred
