As a Staff Research/Algorithm Engineer, you will help create and prioritize research/development directions and will manage and execute research and development projects for our video compression products. You might create, analyze, and optimize new video stream processing algorithms. You might research and propose new high-performance, flexible architectures for future product families. You might design, develop, and optimize multi-processor, multi-threaded real-time video software. You will educate the rest of Harmonic about new video technologies and implementation technologies.
You will work with other Engineering groups and with Marketing to manage the transition of research work into development, through documentation, discussion, presentations, creation of reference software, test plans, test tools, etc. You will work with the Harmonic hardware team to propose product hardware architectures for future products and to create design specifications. You probably will meet with outside companies to evaluate their video and processor technologies.
You will stay informed, and will inform others, about developments in multimedia compression, processing, transmission, and storage. You will meet with key customers to understand their future directions. You will participate in the creation of emerging multimedia standards.
Your video processing or compression background along with real-time embedded, DSP, or multithreaded software development experience will be fully utilized to help us create next-generation products. Your organizational skills, creativity, and personal drive will help lead Harmonic into new technology areas and markets. In this position, you can grow into broader technical leadership and project management responsibilities.
Required Job Skills:
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Strong understanding of video compression algorithms and standards, including MPEG2 and H.264.
• Simulate technology via computer software and evaluate results. Implement technology in real-time platforms to evaluate results.
• Experience with video quality evaluation, video filtering.
• Very good programming skills with significant experience in C/C++.
• Strong diagnostic skills in embedded systems.
Desired Qualifications:
• Assembly level programming skills
• RTOS development experience (e.g. VxWorks, Psos, VRTX)
Years of Direct Experience Required:
• At least 5 years of work experience in the area of digital video compression algorithm development (encoding or transcoding).

Educational Requirements:
• BS in EE/CS or equivalent, MS level or higher preferred.
