Gevo, Inc. is a high energy, team-oriented company that is pioneering the advanced green energy
industry. We are looking for a Strain Development Scientist, based in Englewood, Colorado. The
scientist will develop and quantitatively analyze effective biocatalysts for the production of biofuels and
biochemicals.
Requirements include:
? Masters (M.S.) or Ph.D. in Biochemical Engineering, Microbiology, Biochemistry or related discipline.
? Candidates should have a minimum of 3 years of industrial or professional (not academic) experience
solving industrial problems.
? Experience in collecting and analyzing data from laboratory operations (metabolic engineering,
fermentation, and quantitative analysis of strains) to provide direction for optimal strain and process
development.
? Broad technical knowledge in the area of strain engineering, metabolism, protein biochemistry, and
microbial fermentation.
? Excellent communication and good interpersonal/teamwork skills are required.
? Literature search skills and comprehension of the technical literature identified.
? Proven self-starter; must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
Responsibilities include:
? Strong attention to detail in all work product(s);
? Engineer yeast strains using gene deletion, gene integration, mutagenesis and screening and/or
selection to improve biocatalyst properties;
? Quantitatively analyze and characterize biocatalyst strains for desired properties;
? Utilize experience and observations to capture knowledge from experiments and communicate
findings to supervisor and colleagues.
? Actively participate in regular technical review meetings to critically evaluate project progress and
alternative approaches;
? Using quantitative analysis and critical thinking provide insight for the development of experimental
plans;
? Work with peers and management to identify targets for the improvement of biocatalyst
performance. This includes formulating hypotheses and designing experiments to test these
hypotheses;
? Critically review data for anomalies that may affect results; ensure that analytical information is valid
and useful; Conduct troubleshooting experiments to remove defects;
? Search for ways to continuously improve techniques and procedures;
? Make progress on multiple projects simultaneously. Demonstrate ability to adapt to a constantly
changing environment;
? Independently apply a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions,
products and problems. Maintain broad knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories.
? Set up, execute, and thoroughly document (in a technical notebook) experiments;
