The job purpose of the Supervisor is to provide management, technical, and process performance leadership over the assigned function or department. The supervisory role is a dual role that is fully integrated into senior level positions (e.g. scientists, technologists, logistics coordinators) and assigns leadership responsibilities from a human resources management perspective.
The role has direct oversight of assigned Functional Leads and staff and is considered to be a very visible leadership position requiring managerial, cross-functional communication, collaboration skills, and the appropriate domain knowledge for the assigned function(s) ? see ?Functional Domain Specific Duties and Responsibilities? section below.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
Exercises technical, scientific (as applicable), and managerial oversight of assigned department or function.
In cooperation with directors, the supervisor guides and mentors Functional Leads and team members on technical, scientific (as applicable), and leadership aspects of their role.
Facilitates and drives the performance management and appraisal process for team members, including but not limited to the stretch goals process (Management by Objectives (MBOs)).
In cooperation with Functional Leads, the supervisor manages workload and resources for clinical samples in the laboratory by coordinating and communicating with other team leaders with appropriate and attentive frequency
Maximizes efficiency of sample movement through the laboratory (from initial receipt through reporting as appropriate)
Manages efficient sample tracking through the entire process.
Adjusts staffing allocations and staff schedules to accommodate workload and volume fluctuations.
Works with support departments and downstream departments to ensure timely processing and testing of samples.
In cooperation with Functional Lead(s), the supervisor maintains responsibility for the overall process quality and associated metrics gathering, reporting, and improvement action items.
Participates in cross-functional process improvement activities.
In cooperation with Functional Lead(s), the supervisor provides oversight of space and/or lab facilities.
Provides input on laboratory spatial arrangement for workflow alignment.
Participates in financial reporting and/or data gathering.
Identifies and manages capital expenditures and general use supplies needed for section.
Participates in the budget planning process.
Ensures the effective use of supply and consumable inventories ensuring cos-containment and First-In-First-Out (FIFO) supply utilization.
In cooperation with the Functional Lead(s) and Director(s), responds to cost variance inquiries from upper management.
Ensures proper management of daily/weekly, urgent, and preventative maintenance for all equipment, instrumentation, and workspaces.
Escalates risks/issues in a timely manner using all established operating mechanisms available to seek guidance for mitigation.
Participates in the review of new projects at late stages of contract execution.
Ensures thorough review of work-scopes with accountability for assigned Functional Lead(s).
Provides comments as appropriate on the feasibility, resource requirements, technical details, work-scope, and work-order clarity.
SOPs and Policy Oversight:
Supports existing Functional Lead(s) in establishing and maintaining an annual cycle to review existing SOPs for currency.
Monitors to ensure that SOPs and policies are followed by all team members working within their functional area.
Ensures complete training of both existing and new team members.
Functional Domain Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Provides technical and supervisory guidance to scientists on all matters related to Assay Development and Scientific Analysis processes and standards.
Provides team management and scientific leadership over assay development and scientific analysis efforts performed for clinical trial and on collaborations with external academic and clinical scientists.
Demonstrates leadership and technical expertise in PCR, Next Generation Sequencing, mutational analysis and has knowledge of flow cytometry, immunofluorescence, and immunohistochemistry.
Contributes towards research development plans for new products.
Drives and participates in scientific publications, scientific meetings, and client meetings as required.
Designs appropriate endpoints with the sales team to ensure the study objectives are obtainable and fit the overall project objectives.
Works with the team to define and monitor criteria for assay development design control, progress, quality documentation (Verification/Validation), change control, and data integrity both within and across projects.
Ensures efficient management and incorporation of new biomarkers and assays into new or existing projects, and the timely escalation of any risks.
Ensures proactice and consistent communication with clients and other stakeholders on matters related to assay development and scientific analysis.
Ensures efficient management of data analysis functions and timely escalation of risks.
Educates clients and cross-functional team members on assay development, cell biology, molecular biology and scientific analysis processes and standards as required.
Proactively monitors, understands, and explains technological developments and new genomic applications to internal and external team members as required.
Must have the ability to perform all duties and tasks at a level of proficiency above that of a Senior Scientist.
May perform any of the function domain specific duties defined for the Functional Lead(s) under their supervision.
Education ? Ph.D. degree in Molecular Biology, Cellular Biology, or related field.
Ph.D. ? 6 years academic or industrial laboratory experience.
Previous supervisory experience is preferred.

Position requires occasional long hours, work on the evenings, weekends, and holidays along with the possibility of domestic and international travel in order to support business and/or scientific objectives.
Although not physically demanding, reasonably good health is required for this demanding position.
