Position Summary
The Technical Writer creates, develops, plans, writes, and edits operational, instructional, online, and developer related materials for paper, multimedia, or web-based publications. This position works closely with the Marketing, QA, and Development teams during the course of the software development process to gather input on a task, feature, and product basis. The Technical Writer produces high quality documentation without need for a professional editor.
Essential Functions
- Deliver high quality, user-friendly product documentation for customers (internal and external).
- Understand the audience for documentation deliverables.
- Research and translate technical information (MRD, PRD, Design Specs, etc.) into manuals and/or web-based documents for non-technical and technical users.
- Ensure common look and feel across documentation as needed.
- As an expert, use documentation tools, e.g., FrameMaker, Acrobat, Flare, and image editing tools.
- Maintain a Flare-based help system single-sourced from FrameMaker user guides.
- Work with key staff to coordinate timely reviews of materials for publication.
- Advocate for users by representing their needs in review meetings and logging enhancements and defects.
- Work without managerial or editorial assistance to gather and test content and deliver on deadline.
Job Requirements
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Strong presentation skills.
- Versatility in presenting technical concepts to audiences with mixed capabilities.
- Ability to resolve a wide range of issues in imaginative as well as practical ways.
- Conceptual familiarity with complex enterprise applications and data storage methods (e.g., relational databases, big data, and NoSQL data systems).
- Legally authorized to work in the United States.
- Minimum of 5 years related experience.
Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of the open source community.
- BA Degree in English, Technical Communications, or related field; or BS Degree in a technical or related field; or equivalent experience.
- Knowledge of the software market and open source key players and projects.
- A high level of technical understanding.
- Familiarity with Business Intelligence solutions.
- Experience maintaining Flare projects based on FrameMaker source files.
