UI Lead Greenplum
THIS JOB HAS EXPIRED
The EMC/Greenplum engineering team has earned a reputation for innovation by pioneering “big data†analytics and massively parallel data processing. Recently, we have begun to expand our product portfolio with applications for collaborative analytics, and we are looking for a talented hands-on engineer to lead our Graphical User Interface and User Experience team. This role will be highly visible in the organization, and requires not only deep technical experience, but also an ability to work with designers and end users to express complex ideas in an intuitive and appealing way.
ChorusMuch of our focus is on Chorus, a new application that has generated considerable interest amongst industry analysts and the data scientist community, as well as our own sales force. Chorus is a broad collection of functions that support the work of data scientists, enabling a more agile approach to generating insights from massive data sets. But our vision is that Chorus will become the standard environment for big data analytics, and as such will help build communities of data scientists, within organizations and beyond. It's a bold vision, and the company is fully invested in it.
Job DescriptionYou will lead the design and development of our User Interface (UI) framework that enables the creation of compelling and innovative internet-scale applications. You will be a key contributor to the framework and responsible for the implementation of an architecture that supports rapid development of high-quality interfaces. To accomplish this, you will build a team of experienced developers whose initial deliverable on the new framework will be the user interface for Chorus. You should initially expect to spend most of your time in design, architecture and development.
Candidates need to have deep experience of web technologies and architectures, including UI frameworks and MVC frameworks, and they should have led teams in the development of successful web-based applications.
As a key member of the team, you will…- iterate and prototype and revise often, working with product managers, end users, a UI designer, and visionary stakeholders from Greenplum's management team, from academia, and from business;
- contribute to the development of UI framework and infrastructure, and lead by example in creating robust, well-tested code;
- drive the architecture stack to deliver the vision, and advise at a technical level on ‘buy versus build' for individual components; and
- assist with hiring, mentoring and coaching of UI/UX engineers.
Minimal requirements:- Five or more years in a professional software development role, on at least two successful products
- Three or more years as an architect, technical lead, or manager
- UI experience, including knowledge of standard technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, DOM scripting and AJAX, and client-side frameworks such as JQuery or Prototype.
- Solid knowledge of Java, and Java MVC web frameworks
- A degree in Computer Science
- Experience with Agile/Scrum style projects
Experience in any of the following fields is a definite plus:
- Relational databases
- Business intelligence or analytics products
- ETL products
- “Cloudâ€-related architectures and technologies
- PostgreSQL/Greenplum
More information about ChorusFrom one of our product managers:From a sales perspective, Chorus almost can't fail. At the very least, it's a way to bring the core database technology up to the business users, and a compelling platform for large analytics teams.
But of course, our vision is much, much bigger than that. Chorus is potentially
the paradigm for doing analytics on big data. It will become a self-service analytics infrastructure to support rapid iterations and business-owned solutions within and beyond the enterprise. When you ask people today, what is your development platform?, they say “we're a J2EE shop†or “we use Ruby†or something like that. When you ask people today, what is your analytics platform?, they often won't have a good answer. Perhaps they will say something like “oh, we use Greenplum and Cognos†or “we use SASâ€. Our goal is that, in the next couple of years, people will say, “Oh, we're a Chorus shop.â€
Already the plan is that Chorus will be the platform for CE Live â€" that's the 1000-node community edition of Greenplum that anyone can sign into to use as a SaaS platform for analytics. It's a huge challenge for Chorus, but it will be an amazing opportunity for Chorus to hit the big time in its first year.
Chorus has already made an impact. We've received very positive feedback on the concept after our initial launch. And early feedback from customers has been great.
From our top sales rep:Per our conversation I wanted to send you a note about the importance of Chorus to our future business and how our clients and prospects can't wait to get their hands on it. Ever since we announced this product and vision over a year ago, I have been getting overwhelmed with interest from our clients about deploying this.
I'd even go so far as to say it's one of the reasons EMC acquired us. It is essentially the glue that will hold our entire Cloud vision together. My clients specifically are at least interested in self-service provisioning, so that their clients can have the tools they need to provision their own virtual data marts and not have to rely on IT. But the more advanced and educated clients see this as true differentiation in the market for us and their ability to share insights into their data and business with each other. Things that these guys can't fathom doing today â€" Chorus gives them that capability.
You see all the excitement at X, their entire strategy is essentially based on this very technology and vision that they themselves put together but didn't have a clue on how to implement. When we spoke to them about Chorus, their eyes lit up.
But even more tangible for myself and all us sales guys out here, it's a distinct way that we will differentiate ourselves out here in the market place. It's a change in direction that is leading the market. It gets us out of the “speeds and feeds†conversations and gives us something to talk about to prospects that will completely change the game.
