Visual Designer Volusion
THIS JOB HAS EXPIRED
Hi. I'm Harlan, the Visual Design Manager at Volusion, and I'm not looking for a design robot. I've worked with them; they scare me?always so unquestioning and mindless in their creative processes.
I'm looking for a human-centered visual designer. Your designs respond to the needs and motivations of real people. You understand human centered design philosophy and are comfortable going out into the world for inspiration.
I don't want to know about your glorious work history or prestigious design awards (though they would be appreciated.) What I want is to know how you can help Volusion craft our visual communication style to better engage current and potential customers, who are human.
In addition to your resume we would like you to create something you feel demonstrates your values, creativity, and thoughtfulness?something that presents you in the best manner possible.
It can be anything.
Really.
Your submission should let me know that you belong here and that we need to hire you?that you are a creative, thoughtful, pragmatic person who would fit right in with us. And where have you been all my life, anyway?
If it's your portfolio, great. If it's something else, ideally it would be web-based or mobile, but maybe not. That's up to you.
I will personally spend as much time evaluating your submission as I believe you spent preparing it. I value simplicity, honesty, brevity, and practicality. And just so we're clear: I don't want gimmicks.
So what would you be doing?
Volusion helps eager entrepreneurs and regular humans open online stores. We are best known for our ecommerce platform (http://www.volusion.com), but we also offer a whole host of services related to running an online business.
You'd be working with me and three other members of the Visual Design team supporting our entire Product, HR, Business Development, Support, and Marketing teams here in Austin, TX. We get our hands dirty in: responsive web, mobile, emails, banner ads, infographics, billboards, trade show displays, t-shirts, SXSW, posters, and more. We have the freedom to recommend and produce whatever we come up with.
We have a data-driven approach to design: we test risky ideas to see what works. We work fast and look for simple ideas that make a big difference.
Ideally you have a mix of experience and skills, like visual design and interaction design, or interaction design and illustration.
Our process is pretty fluid: sketches, prototypes, screenshots, wireframes -- whatever gets the job done. We work together. You'll need to help refine other people's ideas and come up with your own. As such, we are also a close group and incredibly picky with who we hire.
And why would you want to work here?
People like it here. People who started working at Volusion when I did almost 3 years ago are still around, and people who have been hired more recently tend to stick around. They pour money into our workspace to make it more creative and engaging. Oh, and we have beer fridays.
You will be challenged. People here are smart and are going to challenge your ideas, but we get along even when we don't agree. Being highly metrics-based means we all talk the same language: results.
Your designs will make a difference. If you are the type of designer that wants to -know- what you are doing matters then you'll like our data-driven approach to design. Working for Volusion you'll be able to confidently describe how your designs have improved our business.
Volusion is useful and successful. 40,000+ online stores use Volusion. Our merchants processed over $2.8B in sales in 2012 and ecommerce sales continue to grow. We've been profitable for years, and are a market leader not just in the US, but in the UK as well.
You'll be working on something that matters. Running a business is an emotional experience, and finding a reliable ecommerce provider directly impacts the quality of people's lives. Not only financially; people spend about as much time working as with the people they love. You'll directly contribute to the well being of everyone who uses our product.
If you are genuinely interested in designing for real people, for a product that large businesses use, and with a family of smart co-workers, I look forward to hearing from you, a human.
