Purpose
The Vice President Commercial Underwriting is the lead underwriter for his/her assigned peril. As such, the Vice President Commercial Underwriting is the Subject Matter Expert for that peril within the company and is responsible for peril production and underwriting results. The Vice President Commercial Underwriting is expected to have a full responsibility of ICAT?s forms and endorsements, modeling methodology, Return on Allocated Capital (ROAC) measurements, and market conditions and opportunity. The Vice President Commercial Underwriting works closely with the Regional Executive Officers (REOs) and President to achieve production and underwriting goals for the unit. Will work with the REOs to develop performance measures for the underwriting personnel.
The Vice President Commercial Underwriting is also a production underwriter, responsible for generating business, managing relationships of ICAT?s most important producers, and underwriting accounts in accordance with company underwriting guidelines.
Essential Duties
Production and Underwriting
In cooperation with the REOs, develop production budgets for the Peril to which he/she is assigned and is responsible for meeting those production goals.
Prepare regional sales and marketing plans to establish production strategies and work cooperatively with the REOs to implement sales strategies for the unit.
Responsible for establishing (in cooperation with the REOs and other business leaders) underwriting guidelines and underwriting authority level for assigned staff. Works with the President, CLD and REOs establish Target Expected Loss Ratios (TELR?s) and PML Premium ratios and will manage underwriting and marketing focus in order to meet those goals.
Responsible for underwriting individual account in compliance with his/her underwriting authority and ICAT?s General Agency Agreement (GAA).
Relationship Manager
Assigned to several producers and is the primary point of contact for that agency. Agency Development responsibilities include monitoring production, hit ratios; renewal retention ratios spread of risk, etc. The Vice President Commercial Underwriting must possess a working knowledge of all of ICAT?s products and is able to perform website training.
Market Research/Intelligence
Responsible for gathering market data for new markets, products and/or segments and working with the REOs and Marketing to identify new production opportunities and track competitor activity.
Gathers and reports on information through visit reporting, team briefings and market updates for the Underwriting staff.
Regional Leadership
Responsible for the peril underwriting results (including regional modeled results, spread of risk initiatives, and concentration of risk controls), sets regional production budgets and assists in Agency Development.
Project Management
Works directly with appropriate ICAT personnel to understand project concept, objectives and approach.
Takes assigned project from original concept through final implementation.
Defines project scope and objectives.
Creates and maintains project schedules by developing project plans and specifications, estimating time requirements, establishing deadlines, monitoring milestone completion, tracking all phases of the project product/service lifecycle, providing timely reporting of issues that impact project progress, coordinating actions, and resolving conflicts.
Conducts project meetings.
- Meets with project team(s) regularly to review project deliverables and deadlines.
- Meets with appropriate personnel for periodic reviews of prototypes and final products.
Provides single point of contact for assigned projects.
- Coordinates interaction and communication among ICAT personnel.
- Identifies and coordinates assignments of internal resources and external contractors to meet ICAT?s project requirements.
- Works with appropriate personnel to allocate personnel time to project tasks and to track progress of their work.
Leadership and Supervision
Provide technical leadership and managerial direction to designated personnel.
Establish initial and ongoing training for personnel to ensure an adequate level of understanding regarding the company?s guidelines, policies and procedures.
Ensure that individual and team performance meets ICAT?s standards of service and quality.
Work collaboratively with all ICAT personnel and business partners.
Develop and maintain effective working relationships with all ICAT personnel, business partners, and vendors.
Provide effective leadership to personnel to ensure a complete understanding of ICAT objectives, to maintain a positive work environment and a high level of morale.
Other Duties
Other duties as assigned.
Supervision
Works under the general supervision of the President, CLD and provides indirect supervision of exempt and non-exempt personnel.

Work Experience
5 to 10 years progressive underwriting experience within the commercial property insurance industry.
5 to 10 years progressive underwriting, sales and/or agency management experience within the insurance industry.
Proven underwriting, sales and agency management skills:
- Oral and written communication including formal and informal presentation skills.
- Ability to underwrite large more complex accounts, including knowledge of commercial property forms, pricing and rating methodology, modeling and valuation tools.
- Ability to manage agency relationships and production.
- Effective negotiation.
- Ability to gather, report and act on appropriate market information and trends.
Education
BA degree in insurance, business or related field preferred.
Insurance certification and/or demonstrated proficiency as a property and casualty underwriter.
Other
Strong mathematical aptitude.
Ability to type 45 words per minute with a high degree of accuracy.
Working Conditions

Able to perform general office administrative activities: copying, filing, delivering and using the telephone.
Able to lift and move up to 25 pounds occasionally.
Must provide home office space.
Must have valid driver?s license and personal vehicle for work use.
Mental Work Demands
Regular and on-time attendance.
Hours regularly exceed 40 hours per week.
Regular travel by conventional means including aircraft, motor vehicle and the like within the region and to other locations as required.
