Web Operations Engineer 7 Digital Media Limited
THIS JOB HAS EXPIRED We're looking for a superb Linux operations engineer (who also doesn't mind dabbling in Windows). We want someone who is keen to help us improve our infrastructure and platforms and who wants to work with a team currently in love with DevOps and getting a bit obsessed with automating everything.
7digital Ltd. is a leading digital media delivery company based in London and operating globally.
We?ve exceptional relationships within the music industry; we have a fully licensed catalogue of over 20 million tracks in over 37 countries giving us the broadest reach in the world outside of Apple and Amazon.
We may be small, but we punch well above our weight. We provide digital download services to over 500 partners including Samsung, Blackberry, HP, Toshiba, Universal Music, EMI, Warner Music, Sony and have delivered millions of digital products in over 25 countries.
We have a great culture and care about the people we work with.
About this job
Half the organisation is made up of tech people (Devs, DBA, Systems etc) and our CEO is a geek. We?ve got good at delivering our products and services at a fast pace in an iterative manner, but the faster we move the more apparent it is we need to be able to change our infrastructure just as quickly and reliably. We need super-talented and enthusiastic Web Ops/Sys Admins who are keen to work in a highly collaborative manner with our other tech staff to build a more robust, reliable and highly automated platform which can cope with scaling up to meet the ever increasing demand.
We run a mix of Unix and Windows platforms ? we?re pretty technology agnostic and are looking for people who aren?t religious about one platform or another, but more interested in being given the opportunity to solve interesting problems with other smart, passionate people. The work opportunities are broad:
we manage all our own hardware and we have a lot of it (500-ish units).
we run our own virtualised environments.
we?re looking to make greater use of IaaS & PaaS.
we have many sophisticated products and applications and want to be making better use of technologies like Nginx, HAProxy and Varnish within them (rather than coding our way out of every challenge).
Particularly, we have big aspirations to improve the automation of everything in our stack, whether that be using Puppet, Chef or some other automation tool. We?re big fans of companies like Etsy and Netflix and also want to view things from a ?full-stack? perspective with tight collaboration between developers and operations people to achieve this goal.
Day-to-day, this job will involve
working in a highly collaborative manner with everyone in the organisation, particularly our other technical staff.
dealing with product and system-level tickets from internal teams;
making occasional visits to our data centres only to do things we can?t do remotely.
There?s a sane, paid, out-of-hours on-call rota (for emergencies only) which currently runs 1-week-in-4. It won?t ever get more frequent than that. This job does not involve IT Support; we already have people who are great at that.
About you (take your pick, the more the better)
3-5 years (or more) experience in a Systems/Operations role.
you like working with other people (not just other operations people) rather than always sitting in a dark corner with your headphones on (sometimes it?s OK).
you?re hands on.
you love Linux, but you don?t think Windows inherently is evil.
you have some production experience running Windows;
you know the importance of monitoring and have experience configuring and managing monitoring tools.
you have hands on experience with server build automation.
you have experience with database/search infrastructure.
you enjoy working out how Windows and Linux can inter-operate sanely and appropriately;
you?re experienced with maintaining high availability and high demand systems.
you care about you being better, your team being better and your company being better.
Many we already use, some we?re trialling, some we?re keen on trialling. You don?t need to know them all, but if you have experience with many of these, things are looking promising.
OS: Debian Linux, Windows Server 2008R2, Windows Server Core
Web servers: IIS, nginx, Varnish
Hardware: Dell, EC2, Cisco, Juniper
Other important tech: HAProxy, SQL Server, Elastic Search, Solr, Debian Package Management, KVM, ASP.NET
