The Demo engineer position is a unique and exciting opportunity for you to showcase your technical and UI skills as you create tools for various teams within the MapR Sales Engineering organization to leverage with new and existing customers. The creation of a compelling demo can have a tremendous positive impact on customer interest, and can be instrumental in gaining credibility with prospects. Because MapR is the leading enterprise Hadoop distribution, You will have a chance to touch a wide array of bleeding edge technologies in the explosive field of Big Data.
Build repeatable demo?s for field SE?s to use in their sales campaigns
Present demo?s internally to small and large audiences
Occasionally present demo?s externally at trade shows and for strategic customers.
Maintain library of demo?s and ensure that all demo?s can be deployed quickly and easily by technical staff.
Details of typical duties:
Long form (10+ minutes), highly technical demos comprised of multiple hadoop ecosystem components, as well as MapR specific features and tools. Demo includes discussion surrounding use case, dataset, and technologies involved. Demo should include some visual component (Tableau, DataMeer, D3, etc). Visualization and process to achieve it are equally weighted. Delivery mechanism is a ?live SE?. Audience is technical with business slant.
Medium form (5-10 mins), technical demo?s which convey use case as well as high level technical details. High level discussion of dataset and use case, demo should show technologies but not focus on their mechanics. Visualization is more of a focus than process to achieve it. Audience is business with technical slant. Delivery mechanism is recording, or Live-SE.
Short form (2-5 mins). Business centric demo?s which introduce use case and one (at most 2) technologies. Visualization and presentation are primary focus. Audience is business user and booth attendee. Delivery mechanism recorded video and/or looping recording at trade show or other event.
with the assistance of other team members, ensure that all demo?s and respective environments are able to be deployed and delivered by SE?s with minimal effort and lead time.
Keep existing demo?s up to date using packaging utilities and revision control (ansible, github, etc)
Internally to SE?s, PS, support, and other cross functional groups. Both for training purposes as well as to showcase new demo?s that are available for SE?s to use.
Externally: on occasion, present demo?s via webex and/or onsite with customers, partners, and prospects, as well as at trade shows. Primarily this is to get live ?practice? of new demo content, as well as to get feedback from customers and field teams on what gets the most traction in the real world.
Required Background, by Role:
The demo?s to be created by the Demo Engineer will range from simple (showing single, core MapR features) to advanced (showing multiple MapR and hadoop ecosystem components, as well as custom code). They should be able to observe and translate technical concepts into customer value by showing key features and use cases which entice customers and prospects to engage further with MapR.
The Demo Engineer will engage with others within the organization to ensure that all demo objectives are met:
Product Specialist team: who will assist the Demo Engineer to determine which technical aspects of the various components are appealing, as well as how to ensure that the tool is the right fit for a particular demo or use case. Product specialists will also assist with building and maintaining the demo environments.
Sales Engineering: This team will be leveraging the content most of all. It is critical two way discussions occur with this group to ensure that the deliverables match up with what is needed by the field.
Data Scientists and Data Engineers: They will be able to provide key insight and expertise on how to best manipulate and find value within the various datasets being used for demo?s.
Marketing: will provide direction to the Demo Engineer in terms of which product areas to highlight, as well as the messaging and related collateral (slideware, logo?s).
Product Management: will provide the Demo Engineer with feature list of components to be used, and will help get engineering involvement when necessary to ensure demo?s are technically accurate and feasible.
In order to be effective, the Demo Engineer must:
Have a strong UX/visualization background. The visual appearance of graphics and dashboards in product demonstrations are as important as the technical mechanics behind the scenes. Someone who has web design and development experience as well as data visualization experience is preferred.
Have experience and be comfortable and knowledgeable navigating a unix/linux filesystem. Much of Hadoop is administered and configured from the command line interface, and nearly all product demo?s will involve Hadoop components in some way.
Have experience using revision control systems (github, svn, etc). Demo code and dependencies must be portable and able to be deployed by end-users with little to no instruction or previous expertise.
Be able to manage projects effectively. Since each demo will be in essence a project, involving inter-departmental personnel, the person will need project management skills and experience delivering projects on time, end-to-end.
Have good presentation skills: whether at an internal Sales Kickoff or external trade show, demo?s will need to be delivered in a professional and engaging manner, both in person and remotely.
Education and Experience:
Educational background in computer science or computer engineering is desirable
Experience with screencasting or video editing software (Camtasia, Screenflow, Quicktime)
Scripting experience, one or more of: bash, python, php, perl.
Experience on one or more webservers: apache, node.js, nginx
Experience with data visualization software: Tableau, Qlikview, Microstrategy, Datameer
Experience with Hadoop a plus.
Knowledge of data warehousing, data analytics and business intelligence systems is desirable.
Strong written, oral, and visual communication skills
Intellectual curiosity and an ability to learn quickly is a must
